Oil Pressure

Good Morning,

Quick question about my 87 300D. After I changed the oil. The pressure has been a little higher at idle. Before it was at about 1.3 - 1.5, now its bordering 2. Checked the oil in it today, its right below the "full" notch. Any other suggestions?

i seem to get the same thing. probably will go down a bit at idle again once you get some miles on the oil, and/or after a highway run.

That's odd. I've gone 1,200 miles on it (mostly highway), which is why I'm wondering if something is wrong, usually it sat at 2 for the first week or so, then it would drop back to 1.3-1.5.

Thats just the wear and tear breakdown of the oil as it's used. As it's heated, cooled, sloshed around, compressed, and pumped it thins out and slowly breaks down.

That's why you must change the oil on a strict schedule and NEVER skimp out on timing or quality. Thats my opinion anyway...

william, I know what you mean. First time I pulled the Rockies the needle came off the peg on the downhill. Scared the **** out of me. All I was doing was pulling hard without a bunch of air through the front as I had the bug screen on. Didn't affect the water temperature, though.

jmak124, just keep an eye on the coolant temperature, oil pressure and level. And enjoy the ride.

Coolant temperature seems to stay rather steady in the middle. Just the increase in oil pressure at idle is whats getting to me.

one other thing..

i noticed my hot idle oil pressure was higher than before after i replaced the 2 o-rings in the oil filter housing stem. i think they were the originals and were very brittle.

Used the same brand, Chevron Delo 15W-40, changed the filter, placed the 2 metal washers on it (there was only the one in between the filter and the lid, none between the lid and the long bolt and caused oil to seep out). I'm wondering if its possible that it was slightly overfilled last time, cause i went by the specifications in the manual (8.5 quarts) and only put 8 quarts in it this time. Can those little washers alter the pressure too?

to me that oil pressure reading in your pic looks absolutely normal considering the temp reading and the rpm's.

Really? Hmm... cause before it was right in the middle. Now... why does my oil filter housing lid always seep oil? The lid is always damp. The oil cap on the engine block also seeps out oil.

Did you replace the rubber gasket on the oil filter housing? There should be a new one with the oil filter.

Yup. The oil seems to seep from the top bolt, not really from the sides.

Leaking caps...

I just wne to the dealer and for I think 6 bucks got a brand new oil filler cap and it sealed my valve cover perfectly. Before this one I had tried two others and even added gaskets to try to seal it.
Best 6 dollars spent at the dealership in years.
