300SD key?

I should ask this in open discussion, but I dont think it will hurt to ask.

I was wondering is it a must to buy the extra key form the DEALER, or can I go to any local locksmith and make one? I heard it will have to charges one for having the key and then one for designing it to my exact orininal?

What year car? Have you done a search in here yet? Seem to recall this issue was discussed not long ago.

Yes you have to go to the dealer, about $25-$30 each.

Untrue, they do not come from Germany. The local dealer verifies your VIN, identity, and proof of ownership and orders the keys from stateside service centers. The dealer nearest me is in Oklahoma City and my keys came from Fort Worth, Texas -- received by me at the dealership two days after I ordered them. Not quite logistically possible if from Europe.

You don't really have to go to the dealer to get a MB key made. I test drove a 300D, and the key was not the kind with a rubber base on it, but rather kind of like a 80's Ford key's base. I saw those kind of keys at the Sears locksmith.

The W123 M-Bs use a different kind of key than the W126s, that's why. You could probably get a key made for a 300D at any Wal-Fart, but a W126, like the 300SD, is a different matter entirely.

A locksmith can make 123 keys...if they can get the blanks.

I couldn't find any blanks for a 123 key (even at two different dealers ), so this is what I did. I found a Honda key blank that has the same grooves, bu the shoulder was closer to the end. I then carefully cut the shuolder back to the right length, and then cut the key. I made 3 or 4 of these, and they work great...as valet keys. Unfortunately, they don't unlock the passenger's door or the trunk...but they unlock the driver's door and work the key switch just fine, so they work real well for my girlfriend and my mom.

I wish I could find a few master key blanks, though...

BTW, this was all done with a key-cutting machine that I have access to.

w126 keys? :(

Unfortunately, I have a w126 with no door keys (P.O. couldn't find them)
I took a lock cylinder to the locksmith and he said they were high secuiry locks. I have an ignition key that works fine but no door key (ign. one just slides in and won't turn)
All the locks are in good condition, I think the ignition has been replaced and thus the different key. Do I need to deal with the dealership on this issue of getting a door key or is there someone/somewhere I can send a cylinder to get a key made for it cheaper (locksmith told me 80 bucks for a door key...they use the vin...etc)
It would be really nice to find a decently priced key maker for this problem...I have a cylinder out and I could ship it somewhere if need be. Any ideas?

Thanks.

It's a matter of finding the right locksmith. I was at a local locksmith to have him 'unstick' the ignition switch of a 108 and someone ahead of me had a key cut for an early 140. The locksmith had the blanks and the (laser cutting?) machine to do the job. He said the local dealer comes to him when VIN replacement keys don't work for whatever reason.
