torx tool
I tried to change the cylinders holding up the tailgate on my '85 TDT and found I cant unscrew thw standing end. A #40 torx bit seems to fit, but when torque is applied, the bit pops out. I did not want to destroy the screw so I ceased my efforts fot the time being. A #45 torx is too large. Does anyone know what tool fits that screw? thanks

I'd need to go look at my wagon but what you are probably encountering isn't a Torx fastner but either a RIBE-CV or ZXN headed fastner. The FSM is no help here either by generically referring to the fastner as a 'hex-headded' screw. Bah.
All these tools are available though Samstag Sales (www.samstagsales.com). See the attached pic:

Is this the bolt that needs a 12-point bit? Some people call it a triple square. I bought mine at a local Murray's auto supply house. It came from a set of four (8, 10, 12, 14 mm) for $9. I think it's the 14mm bit that fit the bolts on my engine. I also heard that AutoZone carries this bit.

Triplesquare is the same as a ZXN fastner.
