How long does diesel fuel last.......
Hey,
I just bought a gallon of diesel to store in one of those RED GAS PLASTIC TANKS. I securely tucked it away in the truck just in case I was to ever run out of fuel. There have been many instances when I came close to that actually happening. I do travel 80 miles round trip (5 times a day). How long can I keep it in there and are there any major safety issues ? ? ? Thanks! kamil

Sorry I cant answer your longevity question but if you ever run out of fuel coast into a grocery store and buy some conola oil and put it in your tank. Unless of course its cold as a witch's tit outside.

that's alot of miles....
I have a gallon in my trunk too, been there since fall. it's half kerosene, half diesel for easy flow in winter. I don't plan to rotate it any time soon. As far as I can remember, I've used 10-12 year old fuel with no consequences... Also, I have the fuel in two plastic bags, and so far no leaks, and it doesn't explode. In the other wheel well is a fire extinguisher.

no safety issues. maybe some mess issues if the plastic tank leaks
it should last a long time maybe forever but if you are worried about condensation or the like then when you fuel up at a station just pour the plastic tank fuel into your main tank first and replace with fresh fuel. that way you'll always have a good extra reserve...just in case. otherwise you could always call mercedes roadside assistance and they will bring you a couple of gal. of diesel - for free.

Roadside assistance is free for MBs for the life of the vehicle. Whether it needs a new battery, a free tow to the closest dealer, or some fuel they are there. I don't remember the exact number but if you call 1-800-For-Merc they should be able to forward you to it!

But, you'll need to buy/carry a suitable funnel to be able to pour from the cooking oil jug into the car's tank.

Kamil,
I had a 275 gallon tank of fuel sit unused for more than 10 years. When I finally got around to using it, I could not tell any difference than fresh fuel. Gasoline is different. I've had it go bad just sitting in my winter car from the end of one winter to the start of the next. Had to roll start the car on a hill to get it started and it missed and sputtered. Put fresh gasoline in it and after a mile or so, when the new gas got to the engine, it smoothed out and ran well. P E H |

Kamil,
I told this story here a while ago so those that head it, forgive me. I was a deckhand on a tug in San Francisco a while back and we had to switch to a double bottom tank of fuel that was around 15 years old. It was kinda dark but it got us home.

Diesel does seem very stable, BUT
the amount of mildew which sometimes forms and hardens on the walls in a partially filled, vented tank in a warm climate can be a serious matter for concern, especially if you add vegoil to the tank and the mildew begins to dissolve again.
My Dad, when strokes made him unable to do it himself anymore for the last 15 years or so of his life, always insisted that I start up his old '64 Minneapolis-Moline 670 Diesel and give him a ride around the farm whenever I came home to MInnesota to visit -- the fuel in that tank had probably been put in there in 1985 at the latest, but it always worked fine, right up to June of 2003, when Dad died. |
