What should I do with this 240D????

Heres the story:
I was given a 74 240D with unknown history. 80K on the clock but who knows?
Will not start.
The car cranks real slow. I put in a starter from a 300D and same thing. Using a new 1000 cranking amp batt.Cables are good Sounds like something scraping when rotating.I even unbolted the torque converter thinking the tranny was slowing it down. No change. REleased the A/C comp belt, turns freely. Compression ranges from 210 to 300+. Valves were checked. Few were only a little tight.
Saw evidence that the lower pan was out before.(half the bolts missing) I removed it and Could see metal particles in bottom. Thinking a wiped out bearing causing crank to bind up. THis would cause the slow cranking right?
Heres my dilema, My thoughts were to get the original engine running and sell the car. There is only a few small rust spots, The trunk lid being the worst. The underneath is clean.I hit several small areas(hood, door roof) with the compound and a wheel and it polished right up. Real nice. So what should I do? Part it out right now or try and find another 4 banger and put in and sell whole car running?. What would I get for it? Labor is a non issue. I am retired and have a nice garage with a lift. Working on old iron is my therapy. Anyone have a good 4 cylinder close to Long Island? Thanks MIke
