Went up to British Columbia for it's first GTG(sponsered by MBCanada, since we couldn't get any participation from this forum:p )
A young fella had a '79 300D that was as perfect a specimin as you'll find. His dad bought it new, and only drove it on weekends. It has only 86,000 kms on it! What's that, about 50,000 miles?

The tires are only the second set the car has ever had, and they were put on in 1980 because the origionals got slashed.

I didn't see a scratch or a ding anywhere on the paint

That picture brought back memories of when my mom was driving my 81 300SD as her car, and we had the same kind of floormats in it until they were damaged and worn out, and replaced by some floormats from a SEL, too long in the back. BTW- where would I find those kind of floormats now? I think they were called "coconut floormats".

Wasn't that car a beauty Rick? Sigh..... One of those cars that gets everyone in to a frenzy on ebay. :p

Whoa!

Wow, and I thought MY car was clean!

That thing is a real beauty. I hope the kid realizes how lucky he is to inherit a wonderful car like that.

Question -- Did the 79 300D come with steel wheels and caps originally? I thought only the 240D came with steelies...

rickg 04-20-2004 10:21 AM

Yes, he does know what he has, thank heaven! He's taking very good care of it. (BTW, he's only 17)
He was there with his mom, and they were both asked alot of questions about the car. They assured us that everything is origional on it, including the wheels/hubcaps.
Here's a link to a few pix the owner posted at MBCanada:

(That silver CLK you see next to it is also his)

Cars sold in different countries/markets had

variety in their trim approaches...likely that the 300 in Canada had 'caps rather than alloys.

A sales book I have on the '81 line from the UK shows a number of differences between versions of our cars offered there, and what the US customers are used to.

I, for one, have always liked the hub caps better than the bundt cake wheels. :)

rickg 04-20-2004 11:33 AM

Ditto to that Ron. Makes a much cleaner appearance I think.

Another vote for 'caps...

such an original car can also provide a benchmark when trying to bring our more-used vehicles back to a state of "correctness".

And "cocomats" are still available...you can find them on the web, and they advertise in The Star.
