injection timing

i am timing my 77 240 d .200k miles. starts a little hard runs ok .
top speed is 78mph on the flat . valves are set right. filters all clean.
i have just checked the timing & it reads 36 btdc .
question is could it be that far off?
thanks

Dang - that's way out. What's your timing chain stretch? Line up the cam marks and read the numbers balancer, that's the degrees of chain stretch. If the chain is stretched, the pump timing will be retarded by half that amount...

36 BTDC is WAY fast -- make sure you are lined up right way round on the cam and crank (and check the balancer on the crank, it may have spun!).

It will run that fast, but will sound like a MACK truck at idle and smoke terribly at full throttle.

Standard spec is 24 BTDC.

How are you checking the timing? Drip tube? If not, borrow, beg, or buy one (I did NOT say steal!) or fabricate somthing similar. There is also an internal drip tester MB makes, but I've never seen on.

All other methods are iffy at best.

Top speed with a decent engine would be at least 85 mph.

Madsen,

I'm suspicious that 36BTDC is incorrect. Seems that if was timed that early, it would try to kick backwards when starting and knock like hell.

How did you measure the timing?
