No Warm,No start

'82 300DT @198,000 mi.
Ressurrected diesel will not crank at all unless @80 degrees(fully warmed up). No click from ignition-nothing. However, I can always start it within 1 second by bridging the front two screws in the junction box on the inner right fender well. Starter(and solenoid) replaced-no fix.Battery new.Neutral safety switch replaced 1 month prior to this problem and I had no problem with the ignition immediately after safety switch repair. Will not start in neutral. No voltage at lavender(purple) wire on forward-most terminal in the fender well junction box with key in the start position.
I was suspicious of the ignition switch but the change with engine temperature is confusing. Is there a spot(junction) somewhere along the course of the ignition wiring that I could check?

Greg

These problems have perplexed me for some time now. I finally chucked another starter in and that seems to be the issue for me. However, I noted that you've done that. In fact, you've done most of the things that come to mind. Therefore, I would look at round two:

1. If the NSS was recently replaced, it may have jarred slightly out of position.

2. My starter was only a year old (on a rebuild) but I discovered that the first guy didn't re-do the windings.

I had people pull start me until I reached the point of embarassment one too many times. Finally starting replacing stuff rapidly and found that the starter was the issue.

Gwizzer,

First I would connect a test light to the terminal on the solonoid where the wire from the key switch is connected. The other lead of the test light is connected to a good ground. This light should shine every time the key switch is turned to the start position. You would probably want the light mounted so you could see it from inside the car.

If the test light shines and the starter does not work, either the solonoid or the starter isn't working. If the test light does not shine every time the key switch is turned to the start position, the problem is some where back thru all the wires and connections, including the neutral switch, back to the key or even the key switch itself.
