Whining & Vibration when turning steering wheel.
My 300DT makes a whining noise, and vibrates when the steering wheel is turned in any direction at idle and low speeds. The front end was rebuilt recently, and the power steering fluid is at proper level. Steering is tight as should be, and at high speeds on the highway it exhibits normal driving characteristics. It actually drives and steers perfectly fine at all speeds. It just makes the horrible noise and vibration as mentioned above. It almost seems to be as though somthing is grinding when I turn the wheel. I havent been driving it since I dont want to make the problem worse, or break anything.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated. |
You said your power steering fluid is at the proper level, but... check it again.
Mine was doing the exact same thing last month; turned out I had a tiny pinhole leak in the power steering line and my fluid was a bit low. |
Thanks for the reply 81Wagon! I will definitely give it another look, hopefully its just a leak, seems that will be an easy inexpensive fix. Will post results later today.

You guessed right! the power steering fluid is leaking. Checked the resivoir again and it was low. Dropped by Petes inc. and bought some ATF. Filled it back up and shes turning fine. Thanks for the help!

Glad that helped.
You'd better find the leak or it'll just happen again. It shouldn't be too hard to find, there's probably ATF all over the affected area... Mine was just a tiny pinprick, but under pressure it leaked like crazy. |
