ignition lock problem, help please!!!

the ignition switch has finally gave up the ghost on my 85 300d.
i have the tumbler out, the connector off the back of the switch, problem is i cant get to the 3 little screws that hold the switch onto the locking device. i need to remove the lock device.

i dropped the steering colum, and removed the attaching clamp on the locking device, i cant get the lock device to disengage from the steering colum. any ideas?? what am i doing wrong??

thanks
matt

The way i removed it was with a flathead bit and a socket. its fairly hard but once you get it going, with small hands, you can just unscrew the rest with your finger or even a small enough gauge of solid wire.

got the switch out!!! and.... it is ok.:(
the little "T" drive in the center lock device has the ears broke off it and wont turn the electric ignition switch.

so i still have to get the center lock device out of the colum... any ideas??? has anyone had one out before???
thanks

There is a pin you have to depress to make the thing slide out of the steering columm. You have to put the key in position 1 and then push the detent. Pin is kinda hard to see. Looking at mechanism from front with gauge cluster removed, pin will be pointed forward towards windshield and just past the clamp towards the steering columm. Pin is probably 5mm dia. Once you push in the pin, you just start to pull the mechanism out and turn/wiggle it as needed to clear the steering columm.

My pin was facing towards the driver.

I was able to pry the casing around the steering column enough so that I could see it (light shining up from beneath). There it was and I could depress it with a small diameter punch.

I was working on an SD and there was more crap in there than from the D that I removed the used part from.

Keep going (instrument cluster out) and you'll eventually get it.
