W123 300D Heart Transplant is a success

I have almost completed the surgery of swappping the engines from my wife's '82 (Josephine) to the '80 (Fatmobile) & vice Versa.

Fatmobile is happy with her new heart and apart from grinding a maligned exhaust against the front subframe, until it was adjusted, is sprightly for her 380 000km.
Josephine is still in recovery, due to some minor bleeding from the IP side gasket. She is expected to be up and about tomorrow.
Here is a shot of the Operating Theatre, during the operation. Note: the Doctor was not in the photo, because he held the camera.;)

I think there may have been previous thread on your swap, but I didn't find it. So I apologize for maybe asking same question again.

I take it your swapping a turbo-charged engine into non-turbo car? What were the gotchas in doing this, are there any? Or is it pretty much drop-in deal, no real changes needed?

Thanks,
Don

Don, neither of the cars is Turbo'd. The reason for the swap was the blowby on Josephine's old engine was excessive (IMHO). Fatmobile will be getting a new home & owner later this year.

@ $150/week, I can let you have one too.
It is in a "high crime" low income area. There are 2, double 40W fluoros and a couple of powerpoints on the switchboard and a sink in the opposite corner.
I rented the unit for 2 weeks to do the job.
The newspaper is my oil spill mop-up and works a treat. Anyone wishing to use this technique can send royalties to me C/o Swiss Banque ;)

BTW, both cars have the same Diff ratio 3.46

Me bad... Thought the 82's were turbo.

DonBaker,

In the USA, '82 300D's are turbo, but this is happening in WestOZ ie Australia. Believe they got the non-USA more like European 300D's without the turbo.

WestOZ,

So then you will be selling the bad body car with the lesser engine in it. Fatmobile is still driveable, but you get the good car and good engine. Sounds like a great plan.

TonyFromWestOz 05-03-2004 08:30 AM

That is the plan, but I will lose some ofmy collateral as a result. The end result is hoped to be worthwhile.
Total costs for the transplant - 2 weeks annual leave (1 used for the swap)
Oil, filters etc, needed to service both cars at this time anyway.
and $300 for workshop lease for the 2 weeks.

Tony, is that $150 AU dollars?
