Hi,
I think the engine on my 1980 240 is going to need a lot of work and there is a cheap 1983 300TD for sale here that leaks some oil but runs/starts really nice....how hard is it to swap engines on these cars? Can it be done? What are the hangups or is it fairly straight swap? The 300TD is also a automatic, where as my 240 is a manual, problems there? Has anyone done this? Could be pretty sweet...!!! Are most parts between these cars fairly interchangeable? Thanks again! -Kurt |

I am in the middle of this very same conversion. There is a lot of stuff that must be changed to be true to the initial design specs of the 300d. The tranny, driveshaft (front part) rear differential, radiator, oil cooler, coolant fil/ expansion tank reservoir, front and rear springs are different (you could get away with using the 240 ones, but...) all the linkage and cables associated with the tranny, exhaust sytem is totally different. This stuff is just the drivetrain, but if you have the car next to you, then I'd say go for it. It's a lot of woprk, but I am happy with how mine is comming along. Sure is a lot more money than I thought, but... at least I'll save anopther good body MB from the scrap yard.
BTW, I have 2 (two) 240 heads in good shape if you nee them. Also, I have a 240 hardened camshaft and bearings if you nee them, too. Thanks, Adam |
