W123 Transmissin 3-4 flare up

Transmission troubles

My 83 300TD trany flares up going into 4th. It's worse under load. Does this mean it's on it's way out?

Proper adjustment (i.e., vacuum, modulator, bowden cable) may help but depending on your mileage it may require a rebuild.

I had the same symptoms until it died on me with the band breaking resulting to total loss of forward gears.

Have it check and good luck!

I can suggest that if it only does it when the transmission is cold, you may only need to change the fluid and filter. Plus in my case I went with a synthetic ATF.

Completely fixed the problem. I think it might have been a sticky valve body piston, and was freed up by the cleaning effects of the synthetic. Plus the synthetic has better cold properties.

It was a really bad flare too. Sometimes it would not go into 4th.

Totally gone with the new fluid. And a clean filter improves operating hydraulic pressure.

Good Luck,

Ken300D

(I've switched over entirely to synthetic ATF because I need my transmissions to last a long time without rebuild.)
