Water Injection - 300SDL

Once again, I am thinking about water injection on my 300SDL. After searching the archives, nothing meaningful came up.

I know that post turbo water injection will decrease the temp, and by earlier results with gas powered engines, increase performance. For the naysayers - what do you think happens to the liquid (or vaporized) water when it is superheated in the combustion chamber? IT EXPANDS! Actually much more that fuel ...

So, has anyone done any work in this area, as I hate to waste time reinventing.

- Mike

source of info

Lots of guys doing this as well as discussing on the dieselstop.com site. Try a search there..

I might look into h2o injection after the intercooler install.

H20 Injection

I would NOT recommend using water injection with an intercooler/aftercooler. It is very possible to cool the intake charge enough that the misted water will percipitate out to water droplets. Water in motor BAD...very BAD. Now, another option would be to use the water or water(distilled)/alcohol mix pre turbo UNTIL you install the intercooler. Then move the mist jet(s) to in front of the cooler, (NOT in the airstream/ducting going into the engine). This would add to the cooling effect of the aftercooler. Here's a link to a kit for gas motors. I think it would work well on a diesel.

Remember a rebuilt engine is $5,500. A new short block is $7,600.

A diesel board I frequent tested a fairly sophisticated water injection system a few years back. It consisted of a Shurflo water pump, Hobbs switches to activate system, NOS nozzles to fog the water in pre-turbo and big, like 12 gallon tanks that were bed mounted in the test truck. The end result was that it didn't seem to make any difference in the EGT's or power levels. That and it used a lot of water if driven under load for long periods of time. Unless you are running more fuel and boost than stock why do you need to cool things down? Heat=power-up to a point when things start melting. I'm not a naysayer when it comes to changing things but understanding why you need to change things is important too. RT
