220D 4 speed in a 123

I have a 73 220D entire parts car. Is it possible to use this tranny and related parts to do a tranny swap into a 123 diesel automatic? I have read here that a 240 donor was doable is a 220 the same? Thanks

Hallo Wolfgang,

The transmission will bolt up fine, although I'm not sure about some of the gear-shifter parts (like the shifter assembly which bolts to the tunnel, you may need that from a manual 123.)

Why?

I just bought a 220D and it makes my 240D feel like a rocket ship. I have not decided if it will junk it and keep the engine/trans or try to save it. I suspect I can buy a 115 body for less than trying to repair what I have.

The doors and fender are no big deal, but there is cancer where the roof meets the body on each side.

The only reason for using the 2.2 engine, when there are so many 2.4's around, is that is what the car is supposed to come with, and the 115 is a prettier car than the 123. I guess even that doesn't hold, since later 115's were 240D's. or am I mistaken?

My 115! mine! my! my! mine! mine! mine!

Gulls from "Finding Nemo"

Lost a bid on a 220D on eBay today. Kept trying to contact the guy to go have a look see. It sounded like it might have been nice. Engine needed work, but I have a spare. Description was vauge, and I couldn't contact the seller. It went for a little over $500. It might have been a gem, or a dud.

I like the W115. Nobody tries to copy it. Everybody makes a knockoff of the W123.

W115's are last, best Benzo. One sporting a 617 (I have a W115 240) and a 5-speed would probably be the ultimate x-country cruising machine. Heck, a 240 ain't bad.
