Question Is there really oil in the Injection Pump ?

I was reading the Chilton Manual today and they briefly mentioned changing the oil in the IP.... I was never aware that there was even oil in there.

Any comments on this topic ?

I do believe that at one point in time there was a place to put oil for lubing the IP.... I think the later design did not require this... like old Solex's I think....

kamil, your 1983 doesn't need that. Earlier models up to about 1976 had that type of pump.

Kamil.

The IP that need to have oil added have a red cap on the top rear that says OEL on the top. Unscrew the cap and put in "OEL". Use same oil as you put in the engine. There is an overflow on the side of the pump and any excess will run out.

I agree, the W115 240D we have has the red OEL cap.

I can't seem to locate the oil filter, where is it on a W115?

Underneath the engine on the left front side. Almost directly below the fuel filter in the above picture.

Yeah, and it's a total PITA to work on. As far as I've heard it's the number one thing people dislike about the 115. When you jack up the front end and crawl under the drives side you should see it, and it's tough to pull it without getting oil dripping all the way to your shoulder. Tough to re-install it without accidently having it misaligned and crimping the rim of the canister. Best o' luck....

When I bought my 115 from Palangi and asked about how to change the oil, his reply was: "First, put on a raincoat." So true. For this reason, 115s are the prime candidate for synthetic oil and 5000+ miles between changes.

But, it's not a horrible job...not like changing the oil on my old '67 Ford F-100. It drained directly onto the front cross member and poured off at a dozen different places.

P.S. Here's a pic of where the oil will spill out unless you get a rag under there...arrow on the left

Changing the oil filter on the 115 240D, a raincoat won't save you, it will just funnel the oil up your sleeve to your armpit. The secret is to loosen the center bolt a couple turns and let it drain or a half hour or so. Trying to remove the cannister when it's full will get you an oil bath every time.
