Starter inhibitor switch
Yesterday I replaced the part of the A/C controlls. The A/C blower fan wasn't working so on a hunch I replaced the switch that containes the hi-lo fan speed buttons. Put everything back together again & all in working now.
A few hours later my wife calls me from the store saying the car won't start. I go down there & this is a list of what I did. I first ran the gear selector up & down once to make sure it was fully in park. (this has happened once before) didn't work. I found a blown headlight fuse. replced it. didn't work. Now at this point I noticed that the electric cooling fan in front of the radiator was comig on when I turned the key to the on possition. That's odd. Because that fan stopped working over a year ago. Thinking it had something to do with replacing the a/c buttons mentioned earlier I took the a/c controls out & disconected them & tried to start the car again. didn't work. & now the electric fan under the hood doesn't work again. Hmm what now. I tried one last thing before I completely gave up. I held the key in the start possition & pulled the gear selector slowly throught the gears. Once I hit Neutral it started! Wa-la. But now I didn't have any reverse or drive. I checked the fuses again & the fuse for the trans was gone. replaced it & now have all drive gears. NOW FOR THE QUESTION. I am fairly possitive the problem lies with-in the neutral safety switch. Can I adjust it? Do I replces it? How much do the cost? Is it easy to do? What will cause them to get out of adjustment? Most important question. Is this a sign of something more to come or is there anything else I need to check before it breaks? Thanks C |

Update. Last night I started digging around to see if I could find anything. I started at the fuse panel. I verified all fuses present were correct & replaced the ones that were missing. I tried starting the car just to see if it would. It Started! I shut it down & hooked up the a/c controls inside. It restarted again & I turned the a/c on to see if it worked. It does. I put it in drive, & it didn't go in like it is supposed to. It went into gear when the shifter was between gears. Is this the Neutral safety switch out of adjustment? Put it in park & shut it off again. When I let my foot off the brake it started to roll down the driveway. It won't go in park now. I rechecked the fuses & the fuse for the Blower & A/C system was melted! It didn't blow, but the red fuse melted. What gives?

It sounds like the shifter bushes are worn or missing. They are cheap as chips, even here in Oz, where anything imported costs the earth, they were less than $Au2.00 each.
This would explain the neutral switch and transmission gear selection problems. It does seem that you also have a problem with the A/C Control box though, blowing fuses. It is worth remembering that the plastic fuses do melt if the contacts are corroded. See if you can get the ceramic ones instead.

Thanks for the replies. The only manual I have right now is the cheap-o Haynes Manual from Auto Zone.
The shifter bushings are missing or just very very worn. I've been listening to the anoying rattle for a little over a year. I guess I'll fix that since I have to get under there anyway. Can I get them from anyplace but the dealer & mail order? As far as the fuse panel. None of the contact were corroded. & just for good measure I cleaned ALL of them w/ a little wire brush as I went through them making sure the right size fuse was in the right place(s). I told the guy at the store I wanted ceramic ones, but plastic is all they carry. If I adjust the neutral safety switch w/o replaceing the shifter bushings, will the switch get out of adjustment very soon again? Thanks, Chris |

Getting the engine to start doesn't do much for you if the transmission won't go into gear. Fix the shifter bushings. The transmission on your 82 300D is not electronically controlled, so the fuses have nothing to do with it. Fix the shifter bushings. Be sure to use the parking brake whenever you park, even after you fix the shifter bushings. The neutral safety switch is "out of adjustment" because the shift linkage is out of adjustment because of the shifter bushings. Fix the shifter bushings.

I picked up some shifter bushings at the dealer today. The trans might not be electronically controlled, but the other day when it was stuck in a parking lot I replaced all the fuses & it went into gear. Also, last night when I discovered that the shifter bushings were gone I saw a few electical wires going into the side of the trans at the neutral safety switch location.

Another update. I got the linkage bushings in last night after alot of swearing & coaxing. WOW. The shifter feals much more possitive than it did before. I had not realized how bad it had gotten. Thanks for all your help.
Now if I can just figure out the darn A/C & fuse issue we'll be rolling in comfort in no time. I was talking to my FIL the other night (also a Mecrcedes owner) and I think he was right. He told me that "when these cars are running right there is nothing better, but when they have a few problems they are a pain in the ....." I thought about editing my post above. But she just rolls her eyes at stuff like that. We kid w/ each other all the time. Thanks again Chris |

How would you know if your old A/C switch is bad ? Did you just guess or did you actually test that there was current going through it ?
I might be having the same problem since when I do turn on the A/C nothing happens. Nothing turns on... Thanks
