Question about fuel bleeding...

I'm a newbie to the diesel Benz world and just installed new fuel filters yesterday. Then I bled the fuel system using the hand pump on the engine. I'm not sure I did this right.

I loosened the nut atop the spin-on fuel filter and pumped until the bubbles seemed to stop coming out below the nut. But I kept seeing air in the clear fuel line that runs from the IP to the spin-on filter. Also, the hand pump was making a whistling or squeeking sound that led me to believe maybe the hand pump is bad. There was also an air bubble that I couldn't get out of the clamp-on prefilter.

Is all of this normal, or did I do something wrong?

Thx in advance everybody!
