can fuel oil "heating oil" be used instead of normal diesel. the reson i ask is my nayber has a 3/4 full house tank and wants to get rid of it "the fuel" if it can work PM me if you live close to orlando and want some Free Fuel :D

Be careful. Home heating fuel is dyed to identify it as untaxed fuel for non-highway use. Using it and getting caught will subject you to some significant fines.

And, I'd be suspicious of a house in Florida with a heating oil tank...could this be a Federal 'sting' operation?

BTW, I see nothing wrong in this. The fuel was purchased with no fraudulent intent. It was bought and intended to be used for home heating oil. It is now being scrapped and being given away. It is probably the best and cleanest method of disposal there is. You can put a quart or two of filtered used motor oil in with it. That will turn the fuel black and get rid of the red dye.

I don't think the oil will get rid of the dye. Give that stuff away quietly. No matter the intended use, the actual use will get you busted. The fines are as high as $10,000.

There is very little difference in fuel oil and Diesel, maybe just some additives missing in the fuel oil. So just add some Diesel Purge or equilvalent and use the fuel oil.

Oil heat in Florida is not all that unusual. We had it when I was a kid growing up in Tampa.

Now that I think of it, that makes perfect sense. All them thar 'transplanted' yankees wouldn't know how to work any other kind of heating system.

If you take the oil, which I recommend, be sure to filter if well. The oil probably has been in the tank for years and could be full of water and rust. Don't everyone jump up and say that Diesel tanks don't rust because the Diesel is oil. The inside top of the tank rusts because the tank 'breaths' the moist air. This moisture and rust will fall to the bottom of the tank and make a very nasty sludge.

Secondly, unless, as was mentioned, this sale is some sort of sting operation, your chances of getting stopped and your tank dipped are about those of the US finding Bin Laden any time soon. But, the fact remains that in spite of what 'mplafleur' says the simple act of having un-taxed fuel in your tank is illegal, regardless of how or why it got there. This is like someone putting an open can of beer in your car. If you get stopped in Texas you can be given a ticket under the open container law even though the can is not yours. You are the captin of the ship so to speak and are responsible for what goes on on aboard.

If you haven't paid Federal and local road tax on that fuel, and more importantly can prove it, you are violating the law. This also holds true for all those of us using bio-Diesel and used veg. oil. In essence you are using the state and federal highways w/o paying for that use and these guys (the Feds)can, and rightly should, get a bit irate about this.

By the same token, I have been driving for over 45 years and have never ever been stopped and had my tank dipped. I would also doubt that anyone on this board or anyone that they know has ever had their tank dipped. So, in essence, go for it.

I know people that got checked and fined a HUGE amount for haing it in their private use pickup truck, had a $10,000 fine plus $1,000 for overy gallon of fuel the truck was capible of holding.......... The people had to borrow against their house to avoid losing it.

Farm Use vehicles are the only ones that can get away with it. Where I am from anyway.
