Stuck Accelerator Pedal

My accelerator has been getting stuck recently about an inch or two forward from normal, and subsequently have a fast idle when I put it into neutral or park. It easily returns to normal if I pull it back though. Is this typically just the throttle linkage needing lubing? I believe I also saw some kind of joint right behind the pedal, where the linkage attaches to it. Could that spot possibly need some lube? Is any grease good or do I need something like lithium? The linkage under the hood was last greased about two years ago by my old mechanic where I used to live (did it voluntarily).

I remember reading a story somewhere online where a guy was driving his Benz really fast on the highway and the accelerator got stuck, so his wife had to grab the wheel and drive the car as he went under the steering wheel to tug on the pedal. Luckily he got it dislodged. I hope that's not in my imminent future. . . .

All those ball joints in your throttle system ought to be lubed with automatic trans fluid regularly.... of course none of us do that.... but I think with your warning indicators you should consider doing it soon..... and check to see if any return springs in the system are broken, loose, stretched, etc...

Check the hose clamps

I had a similar problem. Turns out that a clamp on a small hose near the accellerator linkage was loose, and moved and got in the way and jammed the linkage when the accellerator was depressed. Happened mostly when the engine was hot and in warm weather. My mechanic found it by letting the car warm up real good, and then looking for loose stuff near the linkage while someone else revved it. The vibration moved the clamp, and it jammed the accellerator linkage.

Cost me an hour's labor, a hose, and a hose clamp.

Hope your fix is as simple.

I always put a little white schmier on those ball joints when I change the oil
