Cold Water Pressure

Do I have a problem? When I check the coolant with the engine cold (84 2.2L 190D) I have pressure, but I see no hint of oil in the coolant and the coolant looks very clean. There is no white smoke and the engine seems to run great.

I have done a search and I just can't find the the right article that covers this. Should I worry?

How are you checking for pressure? If you can't pinch the upper radiator hose with your fingers when when the engine's cold, you have a problem with cylinder pressure leaking to the cooling system. The absence of oil indicates that it's not a total failure of the head gasket and/or the cylinder head has cracks. Has this engine overheated?

Has this engine overheated?

Well I don't know. I just bought the car. I drove the car home approximately 180 miles and the temperature guage never waivered (ran the same temp as my 300D).

How are you checking for pressure?

I just took off the refill cap. I had to relieve pressure before I could get the cap off.

The engine was supposed to have been rebuild 20,000 miles ago.

Your car has a well functioning cooling system with no leaks.

Just drive.

howdy there,
as ken says ya have a good cooling system. these puppys have closed system. that boils down to no air gets into the system. as temps change, the coolent expands and contracts, making a slight vacume. an this is the presure your seeing, all 3 of my rigs do the same thing.

When the engine is cold there isn't supposed to be pressure in the cooling system. If it holds pressure for days on end w/out driving the car there is something wrong. Possibly a cracked head. The engine can hold pressure and work fine for tens of thousands of miles so it may not require immediate attention, but it does suggest something may be wrong.

I have 5 engines that I service. 4 MB diesels & 1 Dodge truck. The Dodge and 2 of the MB's that don't seem to have any head problems/overheating loose pressure in the upper rad hose fairly quickly when they cool down. The other two have known issues and they will hold coolant pressure for a LONG time.
