That diesel smell...

My car doesn't smoke much, but there is always that diesel smell in the interior. What's a good place to look for fuel leaks? It's a 83 300sd with 197K.

Fuel return lines at injectors. Go bad all the time. Cigar hose on return line common. Some folks have had trouble with lines leaking at the tank. At least one person reported fuel lines had rusted thru under the body (Yikes!). I don't mind the smell of diesel, but wife HATES it. We now have two diesel cars and I hope to get two more. I'll let her keep her gas V8 as long as I get to drive it when I feel the need. (yeah, like I could take it away....and live)

Thanks Bob. I just got off for summer vacation so I am going to spend some time tinkering. Any health risks associated with diesel fumes?

Not many. It's just that the stuff is insidiously addicitve and will eventually cause you to bore everyone with insipid information about Mercedes-Benz™ diesels.

A friend had a wagon with a leaking fuel tank filler tube that provided some serious diesel perfume in the interior. Harder to conceive of fumes from a sealed trunk, but maybe....

Check your trunk seal. If it's cracked it might be drawing in fumes through the trunk into the cabin.

Check for cracks in the rubber drain which goes into the engine compartment from the area below the windshield wiper. If cracked or missing... it will force engine fumes into the area which picks up air to be brought into the passenger compartment....

Also check the rear deck under your first aid kit. This should have plyable putty around it to seal the trunk area from the passenger compartment...
