Head bolt torque for 603?

I'm getting ready to replace my head gasket on my 87 300D 603 and need to know what the torque is for the head bolts?

Sooty:

These are stretch bolts, so you tighten to a fairly low torque and then tighen some degree of rotation.

I'll try to did the info off the CDs shortly, but I have a new OS and I'm not sure how long it will take.

Specs are often on the gasket package.

It's a 4 stage process:

- 15Nm
- 35Nm
- 90 degrees
- wait 10 min then another 90 degrees

The second 90-degrees will make sounds like a submarnie imploding in the Marianas Trench.

Bolt sequence:

<-- front ---------- rear -->

24 - 20 - 16 - 12 - 08 - 04 - 02 - 06 - 10 - 14 - 18 - 22 - 26

23 - 19 - 15 - 11 - 07 - 03 - 01 - 05 - 09 - 13 - 17 - 21 - 25

Don't forget the two internal hex head bolts into the timing chain cover and the two by the fuel filter block.

There's a specified loosening sequence for the cam bearings and a strict warning that you will bend or break the cam if you don't obey. The cam bearings hide some of the head bolts so the cam has to come off.

sixto is spot on. 4 stage torque & some/many will recommend replacing the head bolts because they are a stretch/TTY type.

Its important to chaseout the threads in the block for the head bolts. They will be dirty!

Thank you all for your support and correct answers. I don't know what I'd do without the help I get from this forum.

It's a job I'm not looking forward to since the last head gasket I can remember installing that was on a 340 CI Hercules flat head in-line 6 cyl. Lathrop marine gas engine!

I seem to remember a tool needed to hold the injector timing, too.

There is no reason to deal with pump timing when pulling the head unless one takes too many parts off.

quick question....
found oil deposits in my 300D radiator...looking into doing the head gasket job as well as valve guides and seals...

can someone if they get the time to...to write up a little recipi book for this type of job?...specific tools and what parts are necessary to come off...(haynes manual and MB cdrom seems pointless at this point)
that would save me thousands of dollars and increase my knowlege by more than 1000 times with these special cars.

thanks a million

While there is, and no procedure detailed, in this forum, for clear and precise understanding for a detailed procedure, I would look into a CD format explaining in detail your needs.

E-bay is one sourse, there are many.

Check the history within this forum, you may find more insight.
