Harsh auto trans downshifting

84 300CDT w/350k.. recent filter and fluid change. Upshifts are fine but it just started downshifting when slowing or coming to a stop..sometimes third and second but always first...since the engine is idling, there's a speed difference and every downshift has a corresponding "clunk/bang" at the rear diff as the freeplay gets taken up by the engine braking. Is this just a simple trans adjustment or an early warning sign?

Thanks

Check your Flex Discs, sounds like something loose on the transmission/driveshaft/diff.

Sometimes a vacuum leak will give you that symptom. On mine, the hose was not a tight fit at the modulator, so it used to come off once in a while before I replaced it. The clunk when coming to a stop was my clue to get under it and check that hose connection.
