Not a MB - '84 Nissan Sentra Diesel any good?

There is one in the paper, $650, just thought I would ask.

I would think that it all depends on how it was taken care of. My brother once had a Datsun pick up with a diesel (might be same engine) It was pretty trashed when he bought it ,he ran it two years burnt a hole in a piston and sold it for more than he paid for it to a group here in Or that were buying small diesel pick ups in any condition repairing them then selling them in Central America...........

Great Little Diesel

I had a datsun pickup with this engine. ran the truck for 12 years, till the tail gate fell off and i could see through the doors when they were closed. The engine and trani (manual) were in top shape. The engine still runs on weekends powering a glider launching winch.

Same kind of story with a friend of mine. He had an old Datsun diesel when I worked with him in 1987. It's still going, with who knows how many miles on it. It was old back then, with around 100k on it at the time.

Talked to a guy with a Datsun/Nissan diesel while fueling up recently. His p/u got more than 40 mpg. Never ever let him down. You can't lose if everything works. Most '80s Japanese trucks, gas or diesel, were bullet proof. I put 270K on my Mitsu gasser before I sold it -- with no engine trouble.

The little diesel hauls up full size gliders.
On fuel use. hows Vancouver, B.C. to Pebble Beach CA for $36.00us at 70 mph all the way. remember that diesel fuel was very cheep then.

I had one of those Datsun diesel pick-ups as well. I think they could run forever with little maintenance. No timing chain to worry about either, only gears. I sold the truck to my dad over 10 years ago and he still drives it.
If you ever come across one again, don't wait.

I heard those International Scouts were MUCH slower than a 240D auto, but the speed wasn't much affected by how many stumps it was pulling

I have a datsun Maxima Diesel. 1982.. Engine is an LD28 (think thats the number). runs better than my 300d just looks FUGGGLY as SHIAT. I've taken my 300D off line cause of problems. The Max is nasty inside from the PO that musta been a 20pack a day smoker. Engine and tranny... RUNS LIKE A TOP. Rear driver quater is smashed from PO accident. I fixed the rear suspension from that accident.

the LD28 is based on the 6cyl block of the Datusn Z cars. Iron head, no turbo. The engine is still available as an industrial use engine.

We're comparing apples and oranges.

The Sentra had a diesel offered in the US from '83-87, and the engine was a 1.7l L4 that bears no relation to the SD22/SD22 L4 offered in the Datsun PU '81-86. I don't think a single part interchanges, but I'm not certain.

Like the previous poster, I also own an '82 Maxima diesel (wagon, in my case) that has the LD28 2.8l L6, and that engine has, again, no relation to either the 1.7l or the 2.2/2.5l engines. It's a great engine, lots of power -- it's non-turbo and would flat run away from my W115 '75 300D -- and gets so-so mileage at about 27 MPG.

The LD28 uses a toothed belt for the injection pump that has a service interval of 60k miles. I bought my wagon from the original owner in 1997, with 86k miles. The IP belt failed within the next 500 miles, so I guess I can say that 86k is the life of that belt . It's not a lot of fun to change, and though the FSM says that you can replace this belt without removing the radiator, I've done the job twice and it's a LOT easier if you do. But it's a great engine.

The PU engine (SD22/SD25) enjoys a good reputation also. I don't personally know much about it, but many folks have espoused their fondness for it.

The Sentra engine is also pretty much an unknown to me.

The International Scout ('76-80) was offered with a 3.2l L6 by Nissan (SD33) with both turbo and non-turbo versions. Again, no parts interchange with the other Nissan engines above, not even the injectors. The SD33 is also a popular marine engine. Opinions seem to vary on the SD33: some love 'em, some hate 'em.

I have compiled a long list of diesel vehicles available in the US in the past 35 years (except VW, where I didn't cover the later Golf/Jetta/Passat models) in this post.

I liked my SD22 powered Datsun P/U. It was a Kingcab and it had a 5-speed. No matter how hard I pushed it, I never got less than 30 MPG's. I over-revved it once by accident and luckily all that happened was that I broke a rocker arm. Parts on the other hand were getting hard to get even 10 years ago. Filters were almost a dealer only thing as well. It became too big of a hassle to keep and maintain it. Plus diesel fuel began to be hard to find where I used to live. The only thing I found questionable in its design was that it only had 3 main bearings.
I've never driven a 240D with a stick but I have a feeling the SD22 would probably be quicker.
