If you do not get a warm response here, you might repost on the vintage board. Many enthusiasts there.

better car than w123. handles better, easier to work on. better
interior feel and materials. greater gas engine variety. slow, slow,
slow diesels. diesel oil filter the worst possible place and designed
by sadistic idiot. he designed some other things too, but not important. not enough chrome on pre 1970s models. wing windows gone after '73. fuel fill pipe designed to ruin suits and dresses. coupes have too much chrome and their doors sag.
3 styles of side view mirrows. narrow (old) grill wide (-73) grill.
real fog/driving lights. many interchangeable parts with 108/107/123/116

w114/115 they are so pretty.

i got a speeding ticket on a wet winding road in a 240d. had
no idea i was going so fast. these cars dont roll. you feel the
roll in a w123.

Who has the production figures for MB models ?
I think the 123 240d was the highest single model sold... like 45,000 units....
This makes a lot of difference 20-30 years later in finding parts cars....

This will probably put me on the hate list of all 123 240D owners.

But the way I see it is that the 123 240D is a bastard child. It is slow by all accounts it dose not have the amazing marine or aircraft quality of the 115's nor the true mercedes classic nothing out of place look and feel of the 115.As far as parts go new or used I have never had any problem getting parts for my 74 240D.

If a person likes the size and body style of the 123 why would anyone choose this model over the 300 D turbo.Price? I see no difference here and I go through Ebay and autotrader weekly. .eaiser to work on ? come now it's the same engine with one extra hole and a very dependible turbocharger.Milage? tell me. Longer engine life? both engines will go 500 K if taken care of.The choise of a manual transmission is the only posible reason and there are 300's out there with manuals. I personable find the four speed automatic very well suited for a turbo diesel......

I hope everyone listens to what you have said...
That should greatly help me in my part car hunting and purchasing....LOL
I have the manual 240d.... and don't need to go more than 80 mph..... and really appreciate the extra room to work on the stuff on the passenger side of the engine compartment... and I drove mine home for $500.... LOL

According to my Mercedes-Benz production models book by W. Robert Nitske, 454,780 units of the W123 240D were produced and sold worldwide thru it's 10 year run from July 1975 (full production starting 01/76) to November 1985. I don't know how many total were brought to the U.S. during 1977-1983, 11,066 240D's were sold here in 1979 second place to the 300SD with 11,067 sold.

I had a 220D 72 for 4 years before I bought my current 240D 77.
The obvious differences, to me, were:
220D/114 lot more engine noise, 240D/123's are better insulated.
220D has better/stiffer suspension.
220D's up to 73 come with the handsome bumpers.
Starting with 74, the 240D/115's got those ugly add on bumpers.
Engine compartment in 123's is roomier and easier to work on.
and of course both are mighty slow.

Thanks,
Vahe

75 240D 115

I just sold mine and miss it daily. It was dog slow buit once up to speed as noted previously it drives like a gem. No rolling and takes bumps like they aren't there.

I have never driven a 300D 115 but I think this would be a great car unless you are looking to go racing. My 240 was slow but driveable, a 300 should have plenty of poop to get you where you want to go.
BTW - turn on the AC in the 240 only after acheiving cruising speed, otherwise it will take you a week to get up to 65...

"turn on the AC in the 240 only after acheiving cruising speed, otherwise it will take you a week to get up to 65..."

The main purpose of AC in 240D's, if you care to know my opinion, is to use it as emergency brake and not for cooling, you can slow down the car by turning the AC a lot faster and safer than the brakes.
But, seriously, 240D's are plenty fast with the AC on, much faster than your typical riding lawnmower.

"11,066 240D's were sold here in 1979 second place to the 300SD with 11,067 sold.
"

Was that a typo ?

Are you saying it was in SECOND place by ONE CAR ?

Post W115 info

Three models of the diesel w115 chassis were available to the U.S. market.

220D 1968-1973
57 HP
88 ft/lb torque
0-60 mph 27 sec (manual)
0-100 km/h 29.1 sec (auto)
83 mph top speed (manual)
81 mph top speed (auto)

240D 1974-1976
62 HP
97 ft/lb
0-100 km/h 24.6 sec (manual)
0-100 km/h 27.4 sec (auto)
86 mph top speed (manual)
83 mph top speed (auto)

300D 1975-1976
77 HP
115 ft/lb
0-100 km/h 20.6 sec (auto)
89 mph top speed

100 km/h = 62.1 mph

In 1974 the cars got different bumpers (to comply with U.S. safety regulations), a different steering wheel, intermittent wipers and different tail lights among other changes. For 1976 the fuel tank was increased in size to 20.6 gallons up from 17.2

The 300D was marketed as a luxury car in the U.S. so it had power windows and sunroof, A/C, fog lights, cruise control, radio and wood trim standard. The 300D was only available with a automatic transmission and had a key operated starter (the other models had the pull knob system).
