Ok I have tried I can't get it locally; but can I order it?
Also is all Mobil 1 15w-50 the same? (this is plan B)

Have you tried the repackaged Delvac 1 as "Truck and SUV" oil (5W-40) in quarts at WalMart?

I buy mine at a truck stop, but I found a site (http://store.avlube.com/automotive.html) that sells it and at a better price. I have to give them a try

A lot of the chain stores (AutoZone, Kragen/Schucks/Chief, etc) are carrying the new SUV formula which is Delvac-1 in quart bottles - and cheaper, too.

Good data. I was thinking of picking up some of that to mix with the 15w50 I have on the shelf but it looks like it works on another theory so it'd probably be best not to. They use moly to lube up the 15w50 and magnesium with the D1. I'm still not wild on running a 5w40 in a OM617.

I would have ZERO reservations about running 5W-40 in an OM617, or any Mercedes diesel, period. It's the 0W-40 that I don't personally like, even though MB officially approves it, and uses it for all the new CDI's as factory fill. I've heard a few anecdotes with reduced performance - one case the wear metals increased in oil analysis with the 0W-40, in another couple cases lifter noise appeared. All were cured by returning to 5W-40 or 15W-50. (Those were all in OM603's, btw.)
I think the 15W-50 is a little thick unless you live in a really warm climate, like Arizona or central CA... it works well even in cold climates, but I figure why have thicker oil pumping around when there's a nice 5W-40 available? |

In theory the 5 shouldn't matter at all once running as it is only the cold value but still, just seems like a lot of load on that oil! As long as the VI didn't breakdown I suppose it shouldn't be a problem at all.
Nope, not that lucky! A little more free mileage improvment.

BoostnBenz I was thinking the same thing about the 5w-40, it seemed a little light for summer use. Gsxr do you think the 15w-50 would be better for summer use? Say 100 degree day in traffic on I-95 with the AC on?

If it makes you feel better, sure, you can use the 15W-50 in summer. There's no harm and at worst, you might lose a fraction of MPG, that's it. The 15W-50 is great oil but the main advantage, IMO, is the 5-quart jug was available at Wal-Mart for $19 (very cheap). I personally feel the 5W-40 is a superior product... and now that we can get it easily, and cheaper, I'll be using that exclusively. (D-1 used to only be available in gallons for ~$24-$28, now in quarts as 'SUV' formula for under $5/qt!)
I personally use Delvac-1 5W-40 (M-1 SUV) year round, both when I lived in Sacramento (115F summers) and up here in Spudland (below freezing winters). That's the nice thing about quality synthetics, they don't thin out or fail at extreme temps, they're plenty safe. It's the xW-30 (or xW-20!) weights that you CAN NOT use, they are explicitly verboten by Mercedes. |

I guess I should bring the 0w-20 I got for it back.
It probably makes no difference but I feel better with the 15w-50 in the summer. Well I just bought 10 quarts of the 15w-50 Mobil 1. @ $4.79 each. This stuff better be good, I'm used to paying $7.99 a gallon for Delo. One more question Gsxr (thanks btw) When I first got my car it had no records at all so I changed to Delo 15w-40 right away. I left the first change in their for only 600 miles, because I did it when it was cold and didn't get all of the old oil. The second change currently has 1,700 miles on it. I am changing the oil for two reasons, one I want to clean the engine out a little. Two I really want to see if my lifters will quiet down. My question is how long should I leave the Mobil 1 in their? Could I just change it in 5k miles or should I do it sooner? I have always heard you should do your first synthetic change at a short intervil because it will clean out a lot of crap. But I have flushed it twice with Delo already.

Hatterasguy,
I'm in a similar situation. I just switched back to M1 SUV after running Delo 400 dino for the past 30k miles (lifters beginning to tap). I replaced the filter only at 1000 miles, and will change everything at 5000 miles initially, then going to 7,500 miles going forward.

Did it help your lifters?

Good questions. Some people prefer to change the first fill of Mobil-1 early, say at 3kmi. That's fine if you want to and/or don't mind the cost. Otherwise it should be OK to go to 5kmi. After that, I would go at least 5k between M-1 changes, and 7.5k should be no problem... I don't recommend going past 7.5k without at least one oil analysis to determine your engine's soot production levels.
There is no need to change the filter between oil drains, the filter is something like 4x oversize for the application I think, and it doesn't filter out soot anyway. For the first M-1 fill, I guess you could do the filter in between if you'll sleep better at night. Your oil level will drop a good 1/2 quart if you replace filters, the old one holds a lot more than you'd think when it comes out wet! |

Thanks guys this is turning into a good thread. Well the deed is done, my engine is now running on Mobil 1 15W-50. I just drove it 25 miles and my lifters are already a little quieter! This stuff is pretty good.
