Willie Nelson drives a new 320 CDI

Text (somewhat propaganda-like, but anyway...) below taken from the National Biodiesel Board bulletin.

Rgds,
Chris W.
'95 E300D

Country Music star Willie Nelson is the proud owner of a new diesel vehicle that he fills up with 100 percent biodiesel. Nelson recently picked up his brand new 2005 Mercedes 320 CDI and drove it straight to the pump at Pacific Biodiesel, a Hawaii-based manufacturer.

“I am absolutely a fan of biodiesel,” Nelson said. “I use it in my car because I’m a firm believer in using renewable fuels that are better for our environment. We should all be doing our part to reduce our reliance on foreign oil and contribute to our own economy. On top of all that, biodiesel use helps our nation's family farmers, while preserving the land for future generations.”

“Many people like me who grew up in rural America were raised on Willie Nelson’s music and revere him as a musical giant,” said Joe Jobe, executive director of the nonprofit National Biodiesel Board (NBB). “He is adored by millions around the world, and his support for biodiesel will be a tremendous help in raising awareness for the fuel.”

Pacific Biodiesel, an industry pioneer, has produced the alternative fuel in Hawaii for eight years. The company takes in cooking oil from island restaurants and processes it into biodiesel at facilities on Maui and Oahu. Although biodiesel is generally more expensive than petroleum diesel, Pacific Biodiesel has a unique market in Hawaii, where diesel fuel currently sells for more than $2.50 a gallon on Maui and pure biodiesel (B100) sells for $2.35 a gallon. Nelson uses B100 in his Mercedes.

“When I fill up at Pacific Biodiesel, I’m doing something good for America, and that makes me feel better about my personal impact on the planet,” Nelson said. His wife, Annie Nelson, also has used B100 in her Volkswagen Jetta TDI wagon for more than a year.

Where's the propaganda?

Biodiesel is domestic, renewable, clean and feasible. And it's a better diesel fuel.

It may sound like propaganda to some outsiders, but it's all true. Biodiesel is also much better for our cars than regular diesel because it cleans and lubricates the fuel system a lot more. I wish they had more than 5% blend over here.

The real question would be does he make sure they run bio-diesel in his tour bus??? That thing would hold 200+ gallons, and would burn it at a rate more like 6 mpg. The MB "impact on society" would be teenie tiny compared to a bus.

Propaganda

Hey, I'm not dissin' biodiesel! I love the stuff. I recently bought 12,000 gallons of the stuff to test!

I subscribe to the National Biodiesel Board myself. It's just that their bulletin comes across very lobby-ing oriented, which is what it is supposed to do, I suppose.

I guess fans of Willie's who drive diesel MBs do, especially those who use Biodiesel, and that's probably quite a few on this forum. I may not listen to his music (On the Road Again is the only song of his I'm familiar with), or use biodiesel, but I found it pretty interesting. This just makes ol' Willie cooler.

You'd probably be more familiar with his songwriting work than his singing career. One shining example I can think of is that he wrote the Patsy Cline hit "Crazy". Unless you are totally "out" of the country scene.....

You got that right, I'm not "in" with the country music scene. So, the only things about him I'm familar with are (Fourth of July Picnic, Guest Appearances on "The Simpsons and King of the Hill", "On the Road Again" (Which I heard almost everyday as a theme song of a certain series of drivers ed videos, and a parody I heard of "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" called "Blue Hair's Driving in my Lane":p

Ditto.

Being the "Token Conservative" member of Boulder Biodiesel and the most far-right wack-job they all know, it took a LOT of convincing (reading, experimenting, etc.) to get me on this bandwagon, but I FIRMLY believe in the goal of less of our $'s going overseas AND to oil co's.

And ALL of the above is true. Not only feasible, B100 is all I've been running for 6 months now (with a winterizer of course) and the few times I've had to use petro diesel on a long trip, I remembered how noisy, gutless, rough-running and stinky these engines actually are.

Here's my own slogan: "Biofuels, not just for Hippies anymore!"

And what does this have to do with anything?

It has to do with the fact that Willie Nelson has been thrown in jail for Marijuana use so many times, most people have stopped counting.

I thought everyone knew that, but maybe it only makes Texas news.

Have a great day,
