thermostat arrow?

What happens if you install a thermostat
without the arrow pointing up?

leathermang 07-01-2004 10:22 PM

When you get to 4000 rpm your engine turns over to get in synch with it... tears up your engine mounts and shifting levers...

mdlwolf 07-01-2004 10:29 PM

Good one-
Seriously, what's the reason for the arrow?

Gilly 07-01-2004 10:42 PM

If you install it facing up, doesn't that little port with the bb end up on top? I think it's to help air pass through the cooling system, eventually I assume the air ends up in the pressure tank (lowers the coolant level) instead of trapped in the block.

arrow ? ? ?

read the box or back of the package. the arrow in most cases goes toward the engine, if the them. gets installed backwards, it acts like a plug and will not open to let coolent flow causeing you to massively over heat your engine.

You could still install the tstat "backwards" and have the arrow facing up, down or sideways. The arrow faces to the "edge" of the tstat, not in the direction of flow.

That's confusing. "edge" What edge, There is lots of edges?:D Why is there an arrow pointing at a particular spot on the edge? What edge of the tstat housing on the engine is this arrow on the Tstat suppose to be aimed at? orrr is this arrow there just to put the user on the edge of confusion? :p

Mdlwolf, did you do a search? I think this topic has been discussed a few times in here. Maybe try searching for "Thermostat arrow"

mdlwolf 07-02-2004 10:37 AM

|I did do a search but couldn't find exactly what |I wanted to know. |I'm asking because |I just replaced the thermostat when doing a coolant flush and fill and didn't notice that there was an arrow to pay attention to. |I'm possitive |I installed it in the correct direction, just not sure what will happen if the arrow isn't pointing up|? |Guess |I'll just have to take it back out-

coachgeo: You seem a little on EDGE today. Maybe switch to decaf....

Well-
I pulled the thermostat and found it to be about 90 degrees off-
Upon reinstalling the car runs at exactly the same temp.

What I don't understand is why my car runs hotter now that it has been flushed and refilled with new coolant and a new Behr thermostat. Before it would run at about 85 around town and at idle and at 90-97 on the highway depending on speed and AC use. Now it runs at about 95 regardless.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it-

Do a search in here on "burping" Not baby burping but "radioator" My humble guess is you have an air bubble.

leathermang 07-03-2004 12:31 AM

The need to burp is a really good guess...
lots of posts about that situation...

But also... on a good cleaning causing the temp to appear hotter... maybe the sensor plug on the engine got cleaned and is registering better due to better contact with the coolant...

mdlwolf 07-03-2004 09:05 AM

I read up on "burping" and there was definately air in the system. I was able to add almost a quart more. This morning I noticed that the upper radiator hose had flattened, as if the system had pulled a vacuum when it cooled down. I "burped some more and added another half quart. Will keep on "burping"-
Thanks for the help-

Would someone say (or show me via a picture) which way the thermostat goes in a 300E? I have to replace it this weekend.

Thanks in advance,
