weak motor mounts?

I just read a thread where the car was rearended and the motor mount bracket broke. My car was hit in the front and it to had both motor mount brackets broken. Is this a weak area, or is it designed intentionally to do this? If so, any ideas why?

I was told years ago that the motor mounts on these cars were designed to break away in an accident. This was supposed to keep the engine from being pushed into the passenger compartment. I could be wrong, but this does make sense.

I think now day's that is a common safety thing, and has been for years on some cars.
