300D CV 1/2 shaft removal

Whats the trick to getting the 1/2 shaft out. I've got the wheel off, the rotor off, the bolt removed. I pushed the end of the 1/2 shaft out of the wheel hub, but it didn't clear, still about 3mm sticking in. I'm assuming that if I drop the differential the shaft will get jammed in even tighter.

So whats the trick? Do I need to unhook the diff from the end and jack it up a little to get the end out?

Disconnect the differential and jack it up as far as it will go then let the wheels hang down as far as it will go. You may have to work with it a little but you should be able to clear the hubs for the 1/2 shaft to fall out. You did not need to remove the rotors - just the calipers if memory serves me right.

From what I can see I don't need to yank the calipers either. Although I did. Mostly to inspect. Same reason I pulled the rotors.

On that note.. (lets mix subjects and get things totally confused...)

How much wear on a rotor is acceptable before they need to be replaced? As far as I can tell they aren't warped. But there is a good 3mm of wear (lip on the edge of the rotor).

James,
You should be able to mic them to compare what is indicated versus the minimum which should be stamped on them somewhere. I suspect, without seeing them that they need to be replaced with that much lip though.

You should be able to get the wheel end of the 1/2 shaft out. Oh yea, you will need to remove the differential support to allow it to move up some more.

mm alright.. didn't want to make too much work for myself up front.

I may wind up removing it completely anyway. Cleaning the fill and drain plug holes and trying to clean the rear end of it.. I've managed to remove quite a bit of the paint. I'll probably scrub it down and repaint it.

At least the other parts of the rear end look good. Minus the brake lines which I ordered today.
