Recent experiance with this issue on my 87 300DT has educated me quite a lot. Here is what I did.

First, at the advise of another member, I poured about a cup and a half of diesel purge ( Redline or Power Services) cetain boost, injector cleaner/lube, into a large jar and connected a fuel hose from the jar to the fuel supply pre-filter and started the engine until all the diesel purge is emty in the jar then shut off the engine with your stop lever, or by key, either way it doesn't matter, just shut it off before you begin to suck air, then reattach your fuel supply hose and take drive for 15 min or so and then do the same thing again.

I did a total of three purges and I could not believe the difference it made. I did not know my engine could run so smooth and quiet!
My fuel economy went way up also.

I would try diesel purge before you go and spend lots of money, try $57 for each injector and then you would have to have them pop balanced too, also new heat shields.

If your injectors have well over 200K, you could be due for new ones, but try the purge first!

A friend of mine who runs the electron microscope lab at Central MI University has reported that PS and and I think most of the product's like PowerService, is mostly bio-diesel. The carrier is B100 with some cetane booster.

After bio-ciding the tank, I've run some B2, followed B5, followed by B30 mix. I'll be pulling the filter screen in bottom of the tank tomorrow for cleaning, then replacing both fuel filter's.

Yes, he has done this for us on the TDI forum. Here is a link to a couple of photo's he did for us on the TDI forum TDI Club the page contains 3 large photo's, so beware if you do not have broadband. I will email him and ask if he would do that for us here also.

We have several sources on the TDI club site for injector sales and upgrades, maybe some of the sources can help people here with our MB's.

I'm willing to help - esp if it is to expose rip-off artists...

but it is as availible time wise. Meaning - get the stuff to me to look at and I'll work on it as I can - may mean i can't offer the fastest turn around.

Also i don't do commercial work for free. vendors and folks selling stuff need to pay for any services rendered - in goods or cash, adn goods meaning something i can actually use...

Private stuff - no problem - drop me an email and we can discuss the details - i haven't examined any MB stuff and am not really familar with the injectors but i don't see it being much of a problem...

Thanks for the reccomendation oldnavy - I'll make sure the CMU alumi association gets your phone number

I bought rebuilds since the internal parts of an injector do wear out over time and no liquid (diesel purge) will fix worn out metal parts. I would definitely invest in new injectors since they are not that expensive anyways. Then make sure you send them out to be adjusted and tested. Once you put them on your car you will not believe how much better your car will be running. You definitely will not get that with diesel purge...... trust me; I did both.

Look at some of my recent threads as I even have pictures of the old and new injectors. I was going through the same dilema that you are in now so learn from my mistakes. Screw the diesel purge. Don't get me wrong as I still use purge every few months but I will not use Diesel Purge to rebuild my injectors.

Kamil is correct in part part that injector noozle's do wear from the fluid and nothing will fix that, but keeping them clean will help prevent early wear spray problems.

I fully agree that any injector will need to be rebuilt, or replaced with new eventually.

Understanding where the line is that you draw to replace them is a bit fuzzy!

I was going to replace mine with all new injectors but tried the purge first instead. The improved difference purging made put for me the new injectors on hold!

I really don't think putting new injectors in now could make much difference, maybe I'm wrong but when purging begins to fail to make the huge improved change, I will then buy new injectors.
