another smoking question

I think i've got a fuel issue.... my car is a 92 300d 2.5 turbo w/ about 280kmi. It had new injectors done about 1500 miles ago. ANyway, i wasgetting off the highway about a week ago and it just started billowing black smoke out the back. I mean James Bond style smoke screen smoke!

Anyway, i'm thinking it might be a head gasket, but the car didn't overheat, and it was black, not white smoke. My other thought was that it could be the injector pump- it hasn't been rebuilt in about 100kmi. My thoughts are that if it was the IP, then it would have started to smoke over time- i mean this car had NO smoke prior to this and didn't burn any oil (it would be about a quart down at every change, but no more).

Any thoughts on this?

Check your overboost protection device, mine failed and my 87 300D did the same thing.

My mechanic diagnosed it and it was an easy fix.

the filter is clean (K&N). like i said this was a sudden thing, not over time.

what is the overboost protection? is that like a waste gate?

Also, a "friend of a friend..." told me to check out some switch (electrical) that is on top of the injector pump- anyone have any ideas on that?

maa156, does your car continue to smoke even after you shut it off and restart it? Or does that make it stop?

I have a 1991 300D 2.5 Turbo and a few times I have had it lose power and start belching out black smoke... I stop, and after restarting the car it is fine again. In my case it sounds like some sort of electrical problem but I am not sure how to check it out. Is yours like this or does it still keep smoking? Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

I thought I would add here what I have done so far to try and fix this smoking problem:

1) replace overload protection switch
2) replace crank sensor
3) replace vacuum transducer for engine and turbocharger
