What are some signs if your starter is giving up ?

Hey...

I recently had my car towed home since it did not want to start.(2 months ago) I changed the starter solenoid and it is back to normal. Since I've owned the car I have always been getting this weird sound when I first start the car. The sound never bothered me but now I am thinking that it might be a sign of something..... it goes like a harsh whizzing sound "zzz" "zzz". It is not continuous and only lasts about one second. Once the car heats up for about 1 minute and turn it off and try to turn it back on it does not make the sound.

Lately my car does not start on the first try all the time. Seems like the car is starving for something or just doesn't have enough "umph" to get it going.

I did have the glow plugs changed 2 months ago... valves adjusted 10k miles ago and I religiously change the oil every 3,000 miles. The car is a 1983 240d with 181,000 miles.

My solution is to just buy a big 300D starter if that is the problem. I just am not sure how long a starter is supposed to last.....

Any ideas for me ?

Thanks....

Check your battery cable at the starter.

In my case, when my Bosch starter became worn, it wouldn't spin when it got quite warm while driving in hot weather. After it cooled down, it worked fine. Someone told me that the tolerances were such that this was somewhat normal for a well-worn Bosch starter.
