300D seems slow

This forum, after reading a few dozen postings and replies seems to be a heaven for us MB Diesel fanatics. My compliments to the moderators. Here is another curiosity where I need help:

216,000 mile 300D, 1979, gradually 'losing' power. Meaning, it just doesn't have the pull from start or going up the mountaint I need to shift to "L" to get up. The instructions read that the valves are self-adjusting, my 10+ year mechanic swears that they have to be adjusted from time to time. Hasn't been done in over 5 years. Who's right? Compression is fine, so is the transmission

The valves aren't self adjusting! Your mechanic is correct.
