Jim, that's what I figured...I actually like the idea of pulling the tranny, except that I don't want to lose the overdrive gear. I'm also concerned with what RT said about the differential gearing being super-low (compared to M-B, at least), which is pushing me further towards keeping the Toy's 5sp...

Sixto, just got off the horn with a DMV rep, and it doesn't look like there'll be a problem at all. After the transplant, I have to take it in to a DMV to verify that there is in fact a diesel in there, then they issue a replacement title and I'm home-free. They specifically said that the model year of the "new" engine is not an issue, at least with a diesel...with a g@$, though, you may be right.

LK1, too much time, yes...too much $$, no. I'm trying to figure out how much this would cost...so it's not fair to say that it'll cost a fortune yet. If it does cost that much, I'll either put another 22R in and sell it (or try to find a harmonic balancer and fix this engine), or junk it as-is (I refuse to own anything g@$-powered). That said, if I can run it on WVO, fuel cost will be nearly nil...and the whole idea is to try to do this on a budget. It doesn't look like any major body/frame modifications will be needed to get the 616 to fit in (unless it's longer than I think it is; hence I started the other thread).

tolive, very impressive job there

Chip, I hear you there...unless I can find an M-B 5 speed, I have to weigh the costs of an adaptor versus the benefit of the overdrive gear. I should send an E-mail off to Advance Adaptors to see how much it'll go for...

Warden,
I can't take any credit for the swap, just passing along what a fellow diesel nut is capable of.
