need advice on isolating vacuum problem
My 84 300D has a vacuum problem, seems to be intermittent. Will not shut off sometimes, power brake booster not functioning sometimes, power door locks wont lock at all (though they all open up once I start driving.)
I have looked in the the most obvious places for leaks, but the mere fact that the problem seems to be intermittent makes me think the pump is pulling a weak vacuum and/or on its last legs. I tried a search, and didnt come up with answers to the following questions: 1. does this sound plausible? 2. is there a spec on how much vacuum that thing should be pulling? 3. Where is the recommended source for a rebuild kit? thanks, jamie |

jamie have you tried the search feature at top right hand side of the page? That will bring up the info you are looking for.

seems to be I remember.....
that someone once said that there is a check valve in the vacuum system somewhere in the engine compartment. I had the same problem happening once in awhile on my '85 300D. From what I recall the poster said that there was probably some oil that has gotten sucked into the vacuum system and the oil would cause the check valve to stick thus causing the problem. My only real symptom my 300D would exhibit was that it wouldnt shut off when I turned the key to the off position.
I never DID find out what the problem was but since it was so intermittent on my car I didnt pursue it. If you have a catalog from Performance Products look at the schematic they show for the vacuum system. If there IS a check valve then that is the place you will see it. Good luck,

Check valve is on top of the top side of Vacuum pump in the line on the lower driver's side of engine. Average price for the valve is about $35.

where is a good source for the vacuum system parts, I accidentally cracked one of th fittins, and kinda had to re-route the small hoses (incidentally this was after the problem arose, and has made no difference)

FASTLANE is your best bet, but if that fails you can go to www.************************ and they will send you a catalog. The catalog has an illustrated parts breakdown for you.
