I want a lWB diesel, but SDL's are MUCHO $$$

Would I be able to put a 617 into a LWB 116? Would I have to fabricate engine mount brackets or would mine just bolt on? Obviously the diesel would take a different key switch and would require other work such as fuel lines, etc. What else? I assume I would need a different driveshaft? I like my car, but it has no room in the back seat. I don't get how MB could make such a big car, with so little leg room. I'm not freakishly tall or anything, I'm 6', but I have to slide the seat way up just to have people sit in the back. Tell me what you guys think. The more I think about it, the more a transplant is scaring me because of the wires, etc.
Thanks
David

I'm 6'5''.... sure is nice having my 6'3'' father sit behind me without banging his knees or head in the SDL. keep looking! most things are for sale for the right price... Hell, mine could be yours... if the price is right!

It woulda been nice if MB had a 300SDL back in the W116 days. If you have the money, it can be done. I for one would like to see a W116 SDL.

Are SWB and LWB driveshafts the same length? If I did this swap I would have my current SD as a donor parts car.
Thanks

It would probably be cheaper just to find a resonable SDL. But just remember a cheap one could get expensive fast! I only paid $2,500 for mine but have put at least $4,000 into it and the bleeding continues. (all parts!) Your W116 sounds nice, their is a white one down the street from me their sharp cars. Frankly I'd keep your's let the people in the back feel a little crowded, it is not like their trying to sit in the back of a Civic. Trust me from your posts your car is a gem, enjoy it! I'd love a W116! A nice black on tan one would look sweet!

I want you to know that I paid $7200. for this one and it still needs at least $2K worth of parts.

Now, it supposedly has only 106K on the clock, but, 18 years is still 18 years, no matter how you cut it.

You are way ahead in this game. Keep on plugging away with it. Your efforts will pay off.

I don't feel so bad now. I paid 3700 for mine and have put at least $1800.00 in it that I can remember.........I figure by the time I'm done, I'll be in it for about 7k and then it will need nothing, hopefully......the good part is that the car is very reliable, I just like to fix all that I can on these fockers......Lol

They are old cars and they will always need something. done to them.

I love my car though.....drove almost 200 miles today doing about 75-80(sweet spot) the whole way....if it weren't for the little air noise coming in thru the window, it would have been perfect.

Tomorrow I replace alternator......*****..Lol

I can't imagine that it will be cheaper to put a 617 into a LWB body than to get an SDL. And when you're done with your conversion, you'll have something I imagine will have a lower resale value than the parts cars you started with.

I dunno if it's the window or the door seal, but that is the only air leak I have, annoying to say the least.

Plantman . . . . . .

Are you sure that you don't just need an alternator regulator with the bushes attached?

I've been thinking about going. Unfortunately, my committments to my damn rentals are kicking my a** right now, but, we'll see. Everybody needs a day off and I really would like to meet everybody that is going.

If I can make it, I'll bring the SDL, even though it is hardly ready for a show.
