Why? If most of our cars were hit in by an SUV tomorrow (knock on dash wood) they would be made up of junkyard parts.

I don't either.
MTU is right about the piper, put another way --- nothing is free-- especially when power is concerned. Trade one form of energy for another but I can control when and how much this way.
This is something that I am interested in and the fellow that started this thread had a good looking setup that led me to more people that have done the same (electric fans) with more ideas.

Thats exactly how I read it. Just because removing the fan from a heavy, inefficient, archaic Dodge made a small difference doesn't mean it translates over to these Mercedes.

The Dodge is a work truck made for towing 10,000lb loads. It has a heavy duty cooling system with a fan made to handle the large amounts of heat produced.

The Mercedes is a passenger car made to carry 5 people and their luggage. It has a small cooling system with a fan that doesn't even start to engage until the engine is nearly overheating.

Why not? You're driving a car that has nothing but used parts on it.

Used parts.Well I mean critical parts.Like something you really can't let fail if on trip.Like my E Fan,I wired my aux fan to were if the new E Fan fails,at least I can get to parts store.Like my electric fuel pump,I carry another under spare tire.
Now parts like regulators, and body hardware,I will buy used when they show little wear.
But that dang fan clutch no,I don't want to destroy my rad.

Was there something wrong with the 20+ year lifespan of the factory pump and fan clutch? Could you not wire your front fan to come on if the engine gets too hot?

What if the alternator fails and boils your battery? Better carry a spare alternator and battery.

What if an oil cooler line breaks? Better carry extra cooler hoses and 8qts of oil.

What if a cap bolt fails and the engine throws a rod? Better put a spare engine in your trunk.

You get my point? You're afraid of an insignificantly small chance of a catastrophic failure. If a fan clutch fails its FAR more likely to freewheel or seize than to fall into the radiator. Those that do fall into the radiator are usually the result of the owner ignoring symptoms of a failed clutch and letting it go for thousands of miles.

Your electric fan(s) have upwards of 8 points that can fail at any time (Fan motor/bearings, motor brushes, wires, electrical connections, fuse, relay, thermostat/switch, alternator, etc) whereas the fan clutch has only 3 (fluid/seals, bi-metal strip, bearings).

Junk parts

There is a trade off here between junk yard parts and new. I do buy some junk yard parts. I just bought a axle for $35 just so that I could have a core that I knew was German, I will now have a place in SC refurbish it to new including Febi boots. The Chinese axles are not what I want to run on a long trip. Alternators are the same with me, I will trust a Bosch rebuilt but not a Auto-zone.

Check your A/C compressor... and then go on down the list. Were your wipers made in Germany? How about headlights? Tires? oil filter? belts?....
