The om617.952/951 are one of the best engines MB built, the n/a 617 will not last longer. Since the car wont be turbo charged(617.952/951 has stronger internal components and bigger oil injectors then a n/a 617) By example if you take a W126 300SD and make it n/a, First, the car would lunch like Geo metro 1.0L 3CYL automatic. Second, the engine will have to work twice as hard to move the 4100+ lbs W126 around. Third PLEASE leave the turbo alone!!!!! hahahahahaha
Yeah the Turbo-/ n/a camshaft's are different, Like Cervan said the Turbo does have fatter lobes on the came (width wise) for more lift duration BUT the valve clearance is a tiny bit different on the turbo, so when the top (highest part of the cam lobe) on contact the valve is fully open at max setting for that engine.
Diesel's are way different from Gas engines, Diesel have more compression in the cyl's so a lot less valve lift and duration then in like by example a Camaro 1989 5.7TPI or a brand that i hate honda gay vtech or hyungai or tgayota. 45% of my customers are Asian car owners..... they pay my rent but that does not mean i need to like thoses pieces of weak asian crap cars.
So the best advice to make an engine Bullet proof First use MOTUL product like 5W40 8100 Engine oil, German/Motul ATM fluid dexron 3+ for auto trans/power steering fluid, Motul diff. fluid etc......
With Motul full 100% Synthetic you "can" change your oil at 9K miles BUT i recommand using a Bosch/Mann oil filter and changing your engine oil at 4,000k miles like i do. Go to a fuel station where trucker pump their fuel to make sure you have new fresh fuel. always change your filters before service time is due. like atm filter, power steering filter, oil filter, fuel filter'S and tank filter. then if your over precautious like me and ONE of my custumers you will e able to put many miles on your SD. Make you as soon as you see unnormal strech in the timming chain you change it, always have you valve's adjusted right, have enough engine cooling, always use M-B coolant!!!!!!!!! its not expensive at all! "unless your cheap"
Anyways if you let your engine warm up to 40' (40 on the temp gauge) before you drive it well that would help too a hot engine does get a worn quickly as a cold engine. driving while your car is at normal operation temps it will last for a long time!.
Of course many of you are going to complain about everything i said but, i do not care about negative comments. I own a high performance shop and i know my techniques work or else i would have been out of business a long time ago!
Its simple to make a benz even more bullet proof then it already is, all you have to do is do everything before its due! and your engine will thank you.
I have a costumer with a W116 300SD and he had 1,300,000 million kilometers on his car and he follows everything i said since 650,000 km's and the car still drives fine. "engine rebuilt once when i first met him pistol rings were tired" i had to replace rings and rebuilt it but other then that the CYL sleeves were in perfect condition he did always maintained his W116 at the dealer "expensive but right stuff done right" untill he met me. "if i think about it when i see him ill try to take a picture of all his M-B km's badges and his gauge cluster. i hope my info was usefull! have a great day tomorow bye
BTW I DID PUT MY NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES AND 17" M-B WHEELS ON TOO ITS AWESOME ILL TAKE PICTURES THIS WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!
