which E320 wagon to buy for $25k or less?
 

I am contemplating selling our 94 E320 sedan with 81K and buy an E320 wagon to replace it. I love the sedan but a wagon would be more functional for us. I need something for the trips to home depot and such. I have an 88 Ranger but for what I can sell it for plus the $70 a month insurance on the truck I can roll that savings into a nice wagon.

I looked at a used Lincoln Aviator this evening....nice vehicle but the wife wants another MB.

Any issues on newer MB wagons to watch out for? I'll probably end up with a 2001 or older to fit my pricr range of $25k or less.

Any suggestions?

I can give you my opinions... I have a 1991 300TE, and I love driving it, but am beginning to not like the gas mileage. My car is listed as a gas guzzler on a website I found a while back.. forget the url sorry.
Last tank I got 15.3 mpg.
Also the range on the wagons seems low.
255 miles and the reserve light comes on.
I can get 20-23 mpg highway, but most of my driving is flat out, 3.8 mile ... 0-30-0-30-0-70-0-75-0 mph and I'm at work. (Two stop signs, one traffic light.)
I've heard that the M104 engine does better. (1993-1995). Some of these cars had wire harness issues, I think 1993 and 1994. So, a 1995 would be the latest wagon I'd consider, at least until the new E320/E500's are affordable to me.
(Hoping that MB will bring over an E320 CDI wagon, or an E55 wagon ... grrrr....)
I also like the 1987 300TD for the mileage and power, and all of the turbo 123's, especially the 1985.
Also I have a feeling (never compared them) that the 123 wagon is roomier than the 124.
I'm not really crazy about the 1997-2003 wagons, but they do look cool in certain colors...
Just my opinions, like I said.

My wife wanted an SUV, so she's driving a 2002 Mountaineer.
I won't drive it unless I absolutely have to.
My wagon has been to Home Depot several times, bringing home about a dozen bags of mulch the one time, if I recall.
The plastic protector tray is key to keep the carpeting from getting totally trashed (the bags were wet and leaking.)

IMHO, get a 94-95 W124 wagon. The larger M104 engine has more torque and lower diff for both better pickup and better gas mileage.

If you need more power, you can drop a C36 engine into these year wagons fairly easily for about $5K.

With my setup and a 2.87 rear diff, I get about 16 MPG city with a heavy foot, 25 mpg on the highway with a light foot.

I've heard that the W210 wagon 96-2002 are very solid. They look kind of bulky at the rear though.

Many wagons are bought bc owners have either kids or dogs to transport. Neither is a good thing.

I personally would get a new W211 or at least a 2000 or newer model to get the newer sportier look.

I bought my wagon because I occasionally need to carry something large, and I'd rather drive a wagon than an SUV or a pickup truck.
