FS: 1991 300D 2.5, super clean, 154K miles, $5900

Hi,

I am selling my wife's car. She just bought a cheaper car, so this one is for sale. More about this Mercedes:

- 1991 Mercedes Benz 300D, 2.5 turbo diesel, 5 cylinder, W124 body
- 154K miles
- exterior is 9.5/10
- interior 9.5/10
- seats and carpet are perfect with NO tears, rips, cracks or stains. Seats are the gray MB tex ( stronger than leather, supposedly Mercedes guarantees it for 25years. My 1984 300D has MB tex also and no cracks either)
- dash has no cracks ( the W124 body has no crack problems like the old W123 1977-85 body).
- new inspection and registration
- power locks, power seats and power mirror work great
- cold AC and hot heat, gets to operating temp quick
- non-smoker car
- turbo spools fast and smooth, no whining noise, and the car rides smooth and fast, compared to my wife's new 1986 300SDL ( long base 6cyl diesel)
- suspension is nice and firm, handles great, steers straight with no play in steering wheel
- automatic transmission shifts smooth and and at the correct rpms
- tires have 50% thread left
- brakes are great, car stops fast, ABS works in the rain, pads have more than 50% left
- car starts right up, even in the recent cold mornings, compression was 430-440psi measured with a diesel compression tester (Matco 1000psi diesel tester)
- engine temp is always at 82 degrees Celsius ( about 2mm above the 80 mark on the cluster)
- no blowby whatsoever
- clean title in hand

Recent maintenance:
- new Castrol diesel oil, and Mercedes Mann oil filter (no Autozone parts on the car, always original Mercedes parts installed)
- new fuel filters ( plastic and metal)
- injectors cleaned and pop tested 1 year ago
- Lubromoly diesel injection cleaner used at every oil change
- new thermostat and coolant ( ready for the winter)
- new transmission filter and Dextron fluid
- new transmission vacuum line
- new o-rings and washers in delivery valves on injection pump, new injector heat shields, new return lines on injectors
- all glow plugs tested to be operational
- new motor mounts ( 1 year ago) and new trans mount ( last month)

This W124 300D is the favorite Mercedes for a lot of Mercedes diesel enthusiasts. The OM602 motor is completely redesigned from the W123 body OM617. Aluminum head instead of cast iron, better oiling system, no problems with spun bearings, better head design, hydrolic lifters, etc. Bigger turbo , more torque and power, especially at low rpms make this car real fun to drive compared to the W123 tanks ( my daily driver is W123 1984 turbo diesel).

Now about the biodiesel part: I have been running WVO with a Lovecraft kit for 13K miles on my 1984, and it runs great. I have not spent a single dollar at the gas station since June this year. I was going to convert this car as well, but we got the 1986 SDL for cheap, so I installed a veggie oil kit on the SDL also, and it runs like a champ as well. So now our gas bill is ZERO dollars. I can install the Lovecraft SVO/WVO kit for additional $1000 ( kit is $600 and labor $400).

Call me at my cell 310-903-1497 if you have any questions. PM me if you want any high resolution pictures.

That is what one of the sales people at MB told me.

Either way, the MB Tex holds up to wear and tear a lot better than the leather back in the days. Look at a 1985 300SD with leather, and 85 300D with MB Tex. You will see the difference.

But you are right, I doubt MB offered a 25year warranty on the MB Tex.

Where are you located?

The phone number in your ad is a Southern California number (310 area code), but your location says DFW, TX.

I used to live in Los Angeles, so I kept my cell number. Now I live in Arlington, TX.

You appear to have some inconsistent information from your Diesel Discussion help thread and your Cars for Sale thread:

The Harbor Freight tester is a US General, not a Matco, although that can easily be explained away as you used both. Either way the readings do not match.

OK, this was posted in the parts section in October. Were these parts needed and installed?

It appears you purchased a car with issues, might or might not have fixed the issues, and either way are selling it rather quickly. No law against that, but it should be duly noted.

How much of the above work have you actually done, and how much was reported to you by the previous owner, who in one post you questioned his possible honesty?

I live in the area and am looking for a W124 but have questions with this car......

I'm guessing we won't be hearing from this seller again, unless he actually fixed the issues, which I doubt.

How badly cracked is the head? and perhaps you should consider moving the decimal place on your asking price one number to the left.

It is also on the local Craigslist.....

The CL ad and the above appear to be a cut and paste. However, the CL ad has an additional part left out of the above:

The bad things:
- sunroof does not work
- radio/cassette play does not work ( needs a CD/MP3 either way)

Anybody see that in the top listing???

I have a beige 1991 300D as well, thats the one with the issues. This one is a different car.

The Lovecraft kit on the OM617 so far is fine. No extra oil consumption, no gelling, it idles a little rough when its very cold outside, but within 2 minutes its fine. People's opinions of Lovecraft got me scared first, but now I am not even worried about it. The OM617 is running exactly as it did the day one.

Sunroof and radio - I added it on craigslist, but forgot here. I am a straightup seller and would not be hiding anything from a potential buyer.

Lovecrap is junk and you're going to have a tough time convincing anyone else on the forum here otherwise.....I have a friend who bought a house in Sylmar and stuck a thermometer in the garage and when it is anything less than 60F it won't start without nearly draining the battery and so they garage it 4 months of the year...in LA no less. Oh and they didn't convert their own car, they bought the car outright from Lovecraft....
