77 240D W123 Central Florida $700

I haven’t been active here in a long time (almost 10 years), but it’s nice to look around and see many familiar avatars….

********************************************************************

$700- Very early production (January 1977- Jerry Ford was still POTUS!) W123 240D , 153k miles. Automatic but with option (see below) to convert to MANUAL. I bought this from , I think, the original owner (weird lady) in 2005. This was to be a backup car to the rusty 240D stick I was daily driving that I thought I would eventually wear out (but didn’t).

This car has the factory ORIGINAL maple yellow paint, manual sunroof, manual crank windows. The paint is in very good condition generally. It needs attention around the front edge of the sunroof. The left front fender has been repainted and was hit again. The right front has a hole down below that could easily be patched. The floors and underside are in good condition- this was always a Florida car. I have 2 good used fenders that I will include with the car. The interior was that horrid dark brown MB-tex and the stuffing had departed from the backs of the 2 front seats. I found 2 decent front seats in a junkyard in a different shade of brown, and my plan was to eventually vinyl paint all the interior parts black. The dash pad is cracked, but I found a coverlay that I was going to paint as well.

I drove the car home, but never titled it to my name (has an open Florida title) or drove it off my property. The previous owner had spent a considerable sum on a rebuilt York A/C compressor, and it was working for some time, but last I checked, did not function. I replaced the water pump and fixed the top tank on the original (I think) radiator, but the rad appears to be leaking again from the top tank seal. I changed the windshield and rear window rubber, and they are still good. The tires hold air but are severely dry rotted. The car cannot be driven or towed on them. I will include a full set of steel wheels with the matching original yellow wheel covers, and a set of bundt cakes (if desired). A couple of issues that I am aware of- the drivers door catch does not close tightly. One hood spring is missing. It has an OEM safety triangle in the trunk (so was likely purchased in Germany). I last had this car running about 5 years ago. I tried to start it recently, but the starter appears to be bad, (and so far I haven’t found a working one in my pile of parts). The engine turns freely and I have no doubt that it will run with a starter and clean fuel. I have and will include all the trim parts for this car.

Apart from the lower right fender, there is no serious rust on the car. It has perched under my pole barn for 15 years. I retired 5 years ago and rarely drive anything now (especially with COVID) and we are downsizing for an eventual move (most of the cars in my old sig need to GO). I also have a low mileage W116 300SD that I will be posting here soon.

OPTIONAL MANUAL CONVERSION PACKAGE

My original intent was to convert this car to stick and sell my old rusty 240D. So I gathered the following major parts from a manual 240D:

Transmission (cast iron) 4-speed
Pedal set including clutch pedal
Complete balanced 240D manual (longer) driveshaft
Manual flywheel
Shifter mechanism and shift rods
Clutch and throwout bearing (both new- German)
(The only significant missing parts are the master and slave cylinders and the hydraulic line that connects them)

Should you want to convert this car to a more desirable manual version, I will provide the above parts as a package to the buyer for an additional $500. (This price is an incentive to sell this as a package to a buyer. If the car sells as an automatic, I will sell the conversion kit, but price is TBD).

Since posting pictures is still so difficult here, best is a link to my Google photos album:
