How do you know if it is aluminum if you are not at the car to check with a magnet?

Automobile-catalog.com says the 1967 300se has an m189 motor. Look at the m189 on Wikipedia and it says iron block alloy head. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M186_engine Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My Chiltons from 1971 shows the 189.986 motor and also same but ending in 7, 8, and 9. You note above Hanno has one with the aluminum block. I suspect one of those variations in numbers represents an aluminum block. It was my understanding that came in all of the 300se for the last 40 years, but still could be wrong.

My departed 300SE (many years ago) was a W112.
Identifying this car (W108 or W109) would be put to bed with a chassis number. I see no evidence of compressor or valve block for air suspension. The "automatic" badge was seen on European cars.

I agree it’s a euro with that euro license plate light (instead of the side mounted lights). I believe all 300se sedans were w109 and euro. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It's a 300 SE because it has an M189 3 liter engine. It's a 108 in all other ways. No air suspension.

Does anyone know whether the VIN is a 108 or a 109 ? I would assume it’s a 109. I also assumed that the difference between a 108 and a 109 is the air suspension. Am I a broken record? I guess that would be a “scratched record”. That saying made so long ago probably means nothing to kids today, but now that I think about it, records aren’t “broken” if they repeat. Are they? Maybe ones that “skip” aren’t completely broken, and ones that repeat are “broken”. Never through much of the saying before now.

FS in Pa-1967 Mercedes-Benz 300SE Sunroof - $3,900
One of the weirdest EPC things I’ve ever seen...
108.015 300seb does show in the EPC when I enter 108, but it has no engine section!!! Edit: And there are no SWB 109. This is what I get when I enter 109: So the car for this thread is the real freak, a no-air-suspension-from-the-factory big six w108. And adding to the mystery is that there’s no engine section in the EPC! What a freak! Edit2: Here’s all the m189 motors my EPC reports: So neither the 108.015 , nor the 109.015 have engine sections in my EPC. The engine section shows for the following though: 108.016 is a 280s (carb m130) 109.016 is a 300sel injected, so I’m not sure there’s much reasoning in matching up the last three digits beyond the 108.015 and 109.015 both missing the engine section in my EPC. I finally went into the m189.989 (as it was the bottom of the list, and only the top two are separated out differently). I found that the EPC starts with “preliminary remarks” which I haven’t seen before to my recollection, and see this: It’s clear that the m189.989 is the one used in the w108 108.015 chassis that may be hard to see at the bottom of the list.

300SE VS 300SEL
An old friend, Joe Alexander in Columbus Ohio had a 300SE for years.
We're talking about the successor to the finback. The short wheelbase car differed from the 250/280 models by having the 3 liter M189 engine, and a nicer wood trim inside. Unlike the 300SEL, the 300SE had the steel suspension and also lacked the full chrome window surrounds on the doors that defined the 300SEL. Joe's car was quite elegant in black on black, with a floor shifted manual. Also sported a set of 15 inch bundts. Was sad to see it parted out because of the high value of the engine, and the somewhat rusty body

pls remind your friend to take down the craigslist ad if it's been sold.
I had a good look at those photos this past weekend and had to remind myself why I don't like that exotic M189 motor. It was easy to remind myself why I don't need another rusty W108, even if it a rare bird like the 30se. Now, if I could find a spare automatic trans for my 300se finny, but that's a different thread. -CTH |

That brings back a memory....water pump was on a common shaft with the generator and the coupling end of one's shaft was rather messed up. Had to machine and fit in shells (think split rod bearing design) to make if work.
Also learned that air suspension overpressure seal would hold for a few weeks using superglue (went that route as dealer could only provide a complete valve body ($$$$ in the seventies). Eventually found that a new seal was available from Bosch directly.
