Selling my 1972 220D aka "Trudy" $2000 (Philadelphia area)

I'm selling my 1972 220D, which got the name "Trudy" back in 2013 when I bought her. There's a few long threads about this car on the forum.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/343021-my-new-220d-my-mercedes-diesel-love.html
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/369554-om-615-woodruff-key-replace-timing-chain.html

Recent years on the east coast have taken their toll.

She's got significant rust in the wheelwells, trunk, driver's side floor (has been patched)
A truck backed into her in 2017 and bent in the bumper a bit as well as tweaking the grille.
The motor is still really strong and doesn't leak a drop. I've run nothing but synthetic since I got the car. Recently put in new valve stem seals and the little powerplant runs really strong. It has an exhaust leak which will make Jack Kevorkian proud, come winter.
Speedo stopped working recently and I haven't had a chance to diagnose if it is the cable or the gear in the transmission. I had the cluster out of the dash and I know that the speedo/odo works just fine.
I JUST put $600 in General Altimax RT 43 tires on the car. The spare is an alloy rim with a 3 year old RT 43.
All the electrical works, but the radio amplifier probably needs to be worked on by Becker up in north Jersey. They restored a period-correct Mexico cassette head unit and amplifier early on in my ownership of the car.
I'm so attached to this car, I don't know how much to charge. I'm hoping to get $1000.
If I had the space to take her off the road, out of the rain, and time to fix, I would absolutely keep her. Right now, I have no driveway and can't do much more of this needed work out on the street.
I'm definitely looking for a car to take her place, preferably a Benz diesel wagon with little to no rust, but I'll definitely consider a gas car, so if y'all have anything you want to work into a trade, feel free to let me know.
PM me here on the forum, I'll send my phone number and we can talk.
Thanks all.
Phil Forrest

Price change to $1000

Looking around at what W114/115 chassis are available, I don't think it's fair to ask more than $1000 for this car. It runs, but it's a parts car, in all reality. The fact that I just put $600 in tires on it is on me and my lack of foresight.

Dang, Phil, sorry to hear about this. If you let go of her I hope she finds a good home.

But man, since Trudy runs and drives so well, and you just bought fresh tires, why not keep driving her? Fix the speedo and the exhaust leak and run it. Chances are with any "new" car you buy there will be repairs to be made. That would put you right back on the street doing the work. You might be better off sticking with a familiar vehicle for a while longer.

Thanks Greg,
The problem is that the car is still registered in NM and won't pass inspection here in PA until a lot of work is done. I'm no longer a student so I don't have the legal excuse to be driving an out of state car. Registration is still good until 2022, but I feel I'm on borrowed time. I need a place to take her off the road and really do the work. I can't drop the fuel tank, put in the trunk floor, and braze in patches for the fender repair all in the street here.

Well, that does put a damper on it. I assumed you could leave the rust alone, but if PA requires the body be solid then that's it, I suppose. I understand about not having adequate facilities to do all that work.

Good luck with it!

Some photos

Here's some photos of the car. The corners of the images may be slightly darker due to vignetting of the lens I had on my camera.
There are black paint spots on the car where I removed rust and wire brushed down to bare metal, then hit the spot with some primer to inhibit rust.
The front seats have been replaced with a lighter color as the old frames and springs had cracked. No tears in any of the upholstry.
Sad to be prepping to let her go.

She just got brand new seatbelts from Germany a couple months ago.
I *might* include the original Kangol belts but for a price.
Feel free to post any questions here or PM me.
Thanks all,

Phil Forrest

UPDATE:
I think I'm keeping Trudy. We're moving to a house with a garage which will let me take my time to restore her.

She's back up for sale

I have the garage, but I don't think I'm ever going to get this car up to snuff for PA inspection.
Just put $600 in tires and over $200 in new seatbelts.
Trying to get at least $1000 for the car. I don't have the time, the space or the heart to part it out.

Someone make me an offer

Trudy is still up for sale.
I just don't have the time to fix her.

Most of the interior is out of the car as I was installing a new heater blower fan when my left knee almost went through the driver's side floor.

I think I need to call this patient done.

For anyone who wants to part her out, she's got good glass, correct Hella fog lamps, 3 working window regulators, straight boot and bonnet sheet metal, correct Becker Mexico cassette stereo with amplifier and correct fader switch.
Exhaust system from the back of the downpipe is brand new, with les than 20 miles driven since installation.
Tires have maybe 200 miles on them at most. They are new General Altimax RT 43 with correct RT 43 working spare on an alloy rim.
Seatbelts are new German retractable. Original Kangol belts will be included with the car.

Motor is still strong as is the transmission.

I just want to rip the band aid off and see her go before she just gets buried in the garage amidst too many other projects.

Feel free to PM me.

Thanks all,
Phil Forrest

Make me an offer

I'll take offers equal to or greater than scrap price. I don't want this car to go to a scrapper. Since I have the garage, I may just try parting it out but that's heartbreaking too.

Unfortunately you are too far away, otherwise I would take you up on it.

I'm new to this site but been a member of BW for a while. I (think) I sent you an email the other day regarding the car. I've always liked 220D's and would hate to see this one parted or scrapped. Feel free to PM me to talk details on the condition it's in. Thanks

Bump

I updated the longer above post to reflect the fact that the car has a brand new exhaust system.
