Looking for a W140 diesel near Nor Cal
I'm looking for a running and registered W140 diesel near northern California, up to about 8 hours drive from SF/Sacramento area. Running and registered is a must, otherwise depending on the condition I would be looking for one in the $2k-$5k range.

Agree, ^^^^ A '90-'91 350SD/SDL - much better play.
Wish I'd of bought one used in the late '90s, rather than a new '99 W210 E300TD. . |

I am too tall to drive a w126, my head touches the roof and my feet are so big (size 14) that I have to turn my foot sideways to press the accelerator. I had a 300SDL and just recently sold it because I didn't want to put that much time and money into a car that I don't fit in, I have driven a W140 and it was far more comfortable. I also want to put a OM606/722.6 in it and a W140 would be a lot easier than a W126 to do that.

Does a 92-95 W140 transmission tunnel fit a 722.6 or does it have to be reshaped?

Just a guess but I don't think they changed enough to make a difference? I think the 96->97 changes were just a facelift. I actually can't remember the first year they used a 722.6 in the W140, I know they were the first to use it and the W210 had it in 1997 so maybe 1996?

A friend of mine sold one 93 300SD recently in DFW, for $4000. It had bad head, evaporator leak, among some other cosmetic issues. Smoking a lot. Now there is another one for sale for $9500 that needs work as well. It's not worth that money, and the seller had it for sale for a year or so. Last year, there was a mint one with palomino interior near Austin, TX. Posted for $7000. I don't think it sold either, people mentioned it is too expensive. It was really clean and I was thinking about offering $5k, but it was gone by the time I got to it. As far as I know, you may need an early version of the Star system for easier diagnostics of this chassis. Circa $400 used.

I thought about a CDI but they are beyond my skill level to keep running, I can do mechanical stuff but not decomposing computer modules and constant limp mode.
The problems with the W126 are that I have a long torso so I either have to lay the seat so far back I can't reach the steeing wheel or have my head pressed against the roof, and my feet are big enough to hit the underside of the dash unless I turn my foot far sideways enough that it's uncomfortable after a while. A W140 has neither of those problems for me. I saw one for sale back in 2019 for $1750 but it was 8 hours away and I got sick for two weeks the only time I could have gone to get it and it was sold by then. I did see that swapped one for sale at the time, I figured I didn't want something built by someone who couldn't even post an asking price though lol. No hurry, but I want to buy one next time a functional one comes up for a reasonable price. |

I had a w140 gasser and really liked it. I had a couple om606 cars and was really interested in that car too but I just didn’t feel like it after all the back and forth. I think he had a ton of time and money invested and didn’t know where the market was.

I test drove a used '93 300SD in Memphis, Tennessee in about 1997 or so. It was a complete underpowered dog. It came out of New Jersey, had like 70K miles on it, and was like $22K or more. Hard pass. That was the last time I was ever interested in the model. . |
