Guessing we're talking about blue smoke, yes?

SE's often smoked IMO due to the mechanical fuel injection constantly gasoline washing oil off of the cylinder walls. Those systems ran really well but didn't have the fuel management precision of today's electonic FI. It was common to see an S not smoking and an SE puffing.

If it were mine I'd start with a compression test, if it is good I'd put valve seals in it and hope for success. The guides may be ok or at least not too bad and valve seals are not difficult to do with the head on the car.

Don't pull the head off without the correct new head gasket in your hands, the head gaskets are getting hard to find. If the head does come off I'd replace ALL of the guides, do a valve job and likely resurface the head.

Sometimes the heads are warped and can be straightened instead of resurfacing. Resurfacing will up the compression ratio which can bring other problems.

Good luck!!!

Most likely valve guides, but plan on a new head gasket and some machine work on the head, as the margins between the cylinder pairs and water jacket are quite narrow and tend to get corroded and cause the head to leak.

If you plan to keep the car try to get a head gasket and freshen it up. If you can't get one then try the valve seals only. LWB brings up a good point about the the thin margins and the gaskets probably won't get easier to source.

Had a '70 280SE Euro, it was a runner.

Would you do this yourself? If you're going to do it have all the parts in advance. Camshaft believed to be good? I should have mentioned also check on head bolt, valve seal and valve guide availability. A timing chain and tensioner may be needed.

Good luck!!!
