I am surprised you only get 32 MPG, I get about 42 MPG on the highway.
I have a 300D 2.5 and I know several people that have anywhere from 300K miles to 565K miles on the originol engine & tranny. Just a tidbit of info...the 300D 2.5 moror 602.962 is actually a "transportation" motor, meaning it was designed to be run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just thought you may want to know.

I meant combined fuel economy : > i never complain when a 3400 lb car gets well over 30 mpg with that locomotives bullet proof engine... these engines are like the energizer bunny.. they just keep going and going.... the only thing stopping you is you have to refuel em! and they are not thirsty!!

Hard to believe any w124 300D 2.5 gets 42 mpg. The EPA sticker rating when new was 27/33. The most I get is 34 tops.

I think I must have about 30+ books just on Mercedes diesels so I am sure I read it in one of the books.

This morning I just filled up my diesel and here is what I got:
The car took 16.7 gallons
The tripometer showed 677 miles

677 divided by 16.7 =40.53

I am looking at my window sticker now and it says
"Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits and vehicles condition. Results reported to EPA indicate that the majority of vehicles with these estimates will achieve between 22 and 32 mpg in the city. 28 and 38 mpg on the highway. Estimated annual fuel cost $621.

CJ has one of the better 2.5 turbo's I've heard of. His claims are not unrealistic. Mine has approached 40MPG on the highway and typically gets 34-36 MPG in a mixed city/highway environment.

300D 2.5 turbos are the most efficient E-class diesels ever made, given the newer emissions requirements I'm not sure even the new CDI engines could beat them.

I waited 5 months to buy this car. When I bought the car it came with all of the books stamped, all of the dealer records for the services performed and every single gas reciept for when the car was filled up. This car was the local dealers personal car so it had everything, records, purchase paperwork, even the covers and foam cushion used for shipping the car. He kept all of that.

I am VERY happy with this car because I tend to be rough on cars. I do the maintennace, but I buy cars to drive them, not to sit around a look pretty.
