Change steering on 190E - 16v box?

Hey all

Long time no visit, as my car's running quite beautifully!

Replaced the steering dampener recently, and the steering is a lot nicer. In addition, it shakes a lot less, giving (or at least giving the impression of) a much smoother ride.

However, the steering is still as slow as ever, and I feel would be much nicer if there were less turns lock-to-lock.

A 16v has quicker steering - is that just a different steering box? Is it fittable to an 8v, and is it expensive?

My power steering pump is leaking, so if I need to do deal with that, is there anything else I could do whilst there to aid my cause?

thanks

Russ

Hi there, yes the 16V box is quicker ratio and it does make the steering more responsive to small inputs about the eqivellent of a smaller steering wheel, this is fine on back roads etc but on the motorway the steering is more nervous. Basically you loose some of that Benz magical straightline stabillity, I guess thats why every car does"nt come fitted with the quick box. The Sportline models should also have the same unit, but always check the turns lock to lock before buying used in case the donor as had a standard replacement at some point. Regards Linds

Well my 190e-16v seems pretty well planted at cruse speeds. I did notice however its extreemly sensitive to alignment and if you think the kids at your tire store will get it right you will be in for a surprise. I have a spare 16v "project car" I may part out next month. If so Ill list stuff in the classified section.
