I am looking for some help here. I am finaly getting my 92 500E back on the road after a fire ( suspect eng wiring harness related ) over 4 years ago. The question is this I may have the opportunity to trade my stock chip from my 92 500E for an aftermarket chip from a 94 E500. Are the computers the same and since my understanding is that 93 & 94 models were slightly detuned ( maybe just on paper ) is there any value ?. I believe the chip is a Renntech unit. Any input would be appreciated

The 1992 module and chip is different than the 1993/94 module and chip. The chips are not interchangeable. Trust me. BT, DT. The 1992 module & chip gives about +7hp (peak) increase due to WOT enrichment. I am using a 1992 module & chip in my 1994 E500. You already have the hot setup... I'd leave it alone. BTW, check out 500E.com if you haven't already.

Don't waste yer money on ANY chip for the M119 motor ....at best, the power is moved around the rev range but no more power is actually made by any of them on a normally aspirated motor.
Of course, if you do the 6.0 litre re-build from RennTech, then their chip is a necessary item. ![]() |

I run the Ebay 500E chip, picked it up for $69, well worth the money to eliminate the cold start upshift delay, top speed governer removal and a bump in the redline of the car. Probably only nets 5-7 tops.

300EVIL , I noted that you also have a 92 500E. Is yours chipped ?. I ask because of what was stated earlier in this thread regarding the difference in modules and the chip from 92 to a change in the 93 and on. Thakns for the info.

Thanks
I went to the site and attempted to purchase NOW and there was an error. I will contact them directly or try again later. I have to make a parts run for 68 Cadillac ( converting to a BEI ignition system ). Thanks for all the quick responses. By the way that is the best looking non-V8 Eclass I have ever seen. How are your performance mods coming along ?.
Thanks again Alan ![]()

I am running the same eBay chip in my 1992 LH module. Some comments:
1) There was no gain in peak power. Period. Tested back to back at the dragstrip - zero gains. 2) The cold-shift delay is still present on my car even with the chip installed. 3) The top-speed governor is removed, however, I never was able to test with the stock chip to see if the original chip/module *did* have the governor in place. My current setup (92 module with eBay chip) will pull to 6400rpm in top gear, though. ![]() |

I agree there is no noticeable power gain.

I did too many back-to-back mods to be sure if there was any power gain or not, nor did I have any back to back dyno's. Digging around, the chips for the later models were suppose to enable WOT enrichment, hence my comments on 5-7 hp gain. I have no way to verify the accuracy of the information though.
I suspect since the 92 model already had the wot enrichment, there would be no increase in top end power. |

Any stock 500E (92s at least) pull right up to 6450 rpms when the magic button under the pedal is pushed and held down...but seriously I doubt any power or torque gains are made at those revs....chip or not. In fact, the power is petering out up there. So what would be the advantage of a chip that allows the car to go into redline more?
I dragged a few buddies 500Es at New England Dragway (NH) in the early 2000s ...mine was bone stock and the other 3 cars supposedly had a Superchip, a Renntech chip, and the one Neil sells/sold (not sure which chip he copied) We all did 14.1s and 14.5s -6s with the cooling fans on a hot August nite. Of course the person selling the chip is going to tell you it makes more power...but they really don't on the M119. Old news....but $69 is certainly better than $300 or more if you THINK it nets you more power. ![]() |
